It's about finding that next group of core players we can win with in the next 6, 8, 10 years. Let's face it, it's hard for 20-, 21-, 22-year-olds to lead an NHL team. Look at the playoffs.

Scomo is the anti-PM. He's had two extreme calamities befall Australia hit during his term and he did nothing of value, and objectively made one of them dramatically worse.

History won't be kind to him, though the failings of his party will be swiftly forgotten by the public he's an absolute and total failure as PM and he'll wear that for the rest of his days he personally won't ever realise it, because he's far, far too stupid

I think Morrison really does believe, because if anything his entire career has been one gently caress up after another being rewarded with more power and money.

He apparently talked to a few people that he saw the last election result as a miracle from God. That's why he is always looking so smug, imagine if you truly believed that the creator of the universe had intervened to make sure you were the most powerful man in the country.

Tony Abbott slithered off to be a right-wing think tank consultant/speaker etc. As well as whatever he did for the UK government.

Most other former PMs post retirement get handed cushy corporate do nothing jobs, or ambassadorships etc.

What will ScoMo do? Of what possible use is he?

I reckon churches have just enough structure/hierarchy and quasi-unstructured interaction with the general public that people like Scotty from Marketing are able to fail upward with minimal risk of them having to wear the consequences of their inadequacies.

That means it's a skillset that only translates into running the country when the country basically runs itself and has no real issues that require someone with actual leadership skills and experience making tough decisions. It's amazing how good you can look when you rest on your laurels and there's no major fires, floods, pandemics, or any other kind of catastrophe that would require any amount of flexibility and/or refusing to pander to your vested interests.

They do make some changes by tinkering around the edges, i.e. recently introduced Medicare subsidies for genetic screening for couples doing IVF - the only reason I know about that is because it'll directly impact me and my partner, and I assume this is balanced by plenty of other small-scale tinkering around government benefits and subsidies that also makes life worse for other people even if it doesn't make the news.

I want to say this is true of state governments as well but I'm not sure - I know Andrews is big on infrastructure with level crossing removals and West gate tunnel etc, but didn't live in Victoria long enough before his election to fairly say the Liberals never built anything.

Yeah, there's a lot to blame jeff for, but as far as I can tell that's just how a lot of, paying an architecture firm big money for a big thing, architecture stuff seemed to look back then.

I still remember when they had the Finder street renovation comp, and the public all voted for the one with the nice green space on top you could walk on, and just you know a bit of a pleasant space, and the architecture judge people decided on not exactly the worst, but nearly the worst design that made it to the finals.

Chicken hawk Dutton unleashes Australian oil reserve…in US

This would be hilarious if it was not apocalyptically stupid. How the AFR can report this with a straight face is a miracle in itself:

Australia will make a proportionate contribution to the release of 60 million barrels of oil from global reserves to try to keep a lid on petrol rices amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

After US President Joe Biden announced in his State of the Union speech that a collective of 31 member nations of the International Energy Agency would release the oil, Australia said it would play its part by tapping into its reserve of 1.7 million barrels, which is stored in the US.

…Energy Minister Angus Taylor did not say how many barrels Australia would contribute. The nation’s entire reserve is enough for just 1.5 days of domestic consumption.

By all means, read that again. 1.5 days of consumption…stored in the US.

That’s your strategic oil reserve, and your “tough on Russia”, “tough on China”, “national security” government in action.

Aunty Sherry Fisher-Tilberoo, 49, died of a suspected brain aneurysm in the Brisbane police watch house in the early hours of 10 September 2020 while being held on remand. According to the coroner, police failed to perform adequate physical checks of Fisher-Tiberoo before she died and at a pre-inquest directions hearing the coroner said: “There may be systematic issues with respect to the management of prisoners in watch houses.” The assistant police commissioner Brian Codd announced that an assistant watch house supervisor had been suspended after an internal police investigation into Fisher-Tilberoo’s death. The woman, who is not a sworn police officer, was stood down on full pay for alleged failures of duty “in relation to the performance of physical checks” and “related record keeping”.
