Being rich but not as rich as everyone around you frustrates them to no end. Having a 70' yacht and watching someone pull up in a 90' yacht and you want them dead.

High levels of wealth have weird psychological effects apparently. For a hell of a lot of people it starts to become a way to keep score. There comes a point where you really can't effectively consume anymore but you can have a big number on paper and own rare things that people would be willing to trade a big number for if you were actually willing to give them up.

It's truly bizarre. Especially guys like Warren Buffet who just eats McDonald's everyday and lives modestly while hoarding this insane amount of wealth that's doing nothing for anybody aside from representing how much he's winning the game. It's like someone going out of their way to snatch up all of the medicine in the world and just burying it in a hole instead of letting the sick people have it.

Yeah, he's lived in the same house for like 50 years and apparently only pays himself $100,000 a year but keeps amassing a gigantic business fortune because reasons.

It's not like Warren Buffet's amount of putative wealth increases because of work he does or anything. Stock values barely have relation to reality in the first place, and the cornerstone of his wealth in particular is "buy out a business that's already successful, and then keep a guy like Eddie Lampert from trying to do a pump and dump on it".

Tbf, buffet did get on the charity/philanthropy thing with bill gates.

Buffet doesn't seem like a bigger rear end in a top hat than any normal guy who would fall backwards into a pit of golden coins. Probably less of an rear end in a top hat than the average Joe would be, I think.

Imagine if you had that kind of money and you figured out a way to give all but like 8 million away to meaningfully benefit humanity. That would feel insane. Ofc when youre the good guy and you control so much wealth, giving it up might mean it winds up in the hands of someone worse? How do I know some Chinese coal Baron or something isn't going to swoop in and buy the assets I liquidated?

It should be illegal to be a billionaire while poverty still exists in the world.

I kinda get your philosophical point.

But on the other hand how many regular working joes give over 50% of their net worth to charity?

Sure he could do better, but he also donates more than like the entire middle and lower class of the USA each year.

donating half of 80+ billion is a lot less of a financial burden than donating half of 35k

also most of that goes to the gates foundation, which to put it mildly sucks rear end

What a shock, the idiot conservative doesn't understand the marginal value of money, or is deliberately playing coy about it to score a dumb rhetorical point.

Do you really not understand why regular working joes can't give up 50% of their worth to charity? When most Americans can't afford a $500 expense?

"Wow, I gave 50% of my $30k/year to charity, I feel great!" *gets hit with unexpected expense, goes bankrupt, dies*

Whereas Mr. Buffet could give away 99% of his worth and STILL be comfortable for life, like every other billionaire! If you really hadn't thought this through before, hopefully that educates you!

I'm not buying into your stupid rhetorical framing here, being a billionaire should be illegal, full loving stop. That we even have a society that allows people to acquire that much wealth is a loving damning indictment of it.

Honestly I'd say 10 million dollars is about the point where you have more than enough money for your entire life even accounting for your family getting rare diseases and poo poo.

A billionaire has 100 times that amount of money.

Rich people vanity projects are a danger to society even when they're "philanthrophic," because they advance the interests of the rich person rather than the interests of society as a whole. Any real public good shouldn't be contingent on a rich person deciding that's what they're interested in doing with their money. You can see this very plainly with the Gates Foundation interest in education manifesting itself as very intense support for charter schools and outlays to media organizations to advance a positive narrative concerning them.
