Honestly being a casino hustler kind of makes sense BECAUSE esports is dying, probably some of those displaced Pro Gamers would be looking for a way to extend their gravy train

the announcers at the Olympics should start talking about the lines on the prop bets before, during, and after the games

There won't be crowds.

Morbus posted:Excellent post. But making the kinds of "material investments" needed to maintain some sort of competitive posture with China will invariably strengthen labor--especially if this kind of development has to be done in the context of weakened neoliberal institutions. pretty spot on. strong labor is needed here. one of the bigger problems right now with the CHIPS and IRA act to force TSMC to onshore semiconductor fabs here is that the cost structure of employing Americans is prohibitively high - because basic cost of living is entirely privatized, you need to pay high wages (relatively speaking) to take into account healthcare, housing, education, consumer debt, and transportation costs which are subsidized to some degree in places like China. this actually puts a ton of pressure on SGA costs, which impacts the ROI of manufacturing in the U.S. monopolizing IP rights was supposed to allow us to collect rents from overseas manufacturing because labor is typically the biggest cost, which led to the explosion of insurance and finance profits as they consolidated their monopoly power. except now, the basic setup of American employment is very costly to employ large labor forces here and weve backed ourselves into a corner to have any sort of large re-shoring strategy that is profitable. so the options are to either begin a regime of public labor subsidies, which will never happen under neoliberalism, or simply force our IP monopolies vassals to operate at a loss here while subsidizing it with public taxpayer money. even still, pauper labor cannot compete with a motivated and efficient overseas equivalent and quality will suffer. labor saw their power under Covid, but it was quickly crushed under the guise of fighting inflation as financialized firms cannot compete if labor costs increase.

dk2m posted:financialized firms cannot compete if labor costs increase. I don't think financialized firms can compete, period. The entire premise of financialized neoliberal power was to externalize all the costs of the industrial economy and internalize all the profits, but if you turn that crank for thirty years you end up with a rich center with absolutely no productive capacity, with a politics totally dominated by the economic equivalent of a few hundred Smaugs, dragons that do nothing but sit atop a pile of theoretical finance capital gold but no productive capital at all. And they won't let anything change until their power is actually destroyed, the destruction of which destroys the state's remaining power tools (the dollar itself and the financial infrastructure that uses it) as well. Feels pretty locked in at this point.
