not to mention, like

the Grail War is not a good thing. it is not a good practice, it was not made by good people, it was made by aristocratic assholes, and you are in fact summoning the cultural memory of ancient heroes in order to enslave them to your will and ultimately sacrifice them to a wish-granting engine that by the time of the main game doesn't even work properly any more. "Master/Servant" is entirely gross and also entirely appropriate

I might slowly try to cobble together some gross chimera of Fate/Etc, Jojo's and Persona using GAG.

Like, I've already had a few conversations with people on here about a lack of Jojo stuff, and one of my early playtesters for GAG insisted I needed a Digimon/Pokemon class but I couldn't figure out how to do it without intruding on the other classes. I've also secretly been wanting to make a Persona-ish thing just because there's demand for it, but not a lot of systems really take much of a swing at it.

People With God Pals might have to be my priority after I get done stressing about Kickstarters and horror splats. It won't be a 1-for-1 imitation of Fate/Stuff specifically, but if I actually get off my rear end and work on it the Fate/Things will be a hefty influence.

Because it was originally rooted in the maid fetishery of the original harem-styled eroge VN. Mainly because having one player with absolute authority over another, and the general implications of enslaving someone, can be problematic. That's not to say you couldn't do it with a group that's entirely down with that premise. But it's not what I'd choose.

Yes, there is worse stuff in the franchise, but I don't think that's worth acknowledging as something you'd even consider adapting to a game.

if you were going to make a FATE game the logical thing would probably be an Ars Magica-esque system where one player plays a Servant / Master pair, with the GM giving significant input on what the Servant does if not compelled.

We read extremely different visual novels, then. The only person who does any kind of maid stuff in F/SN is Archer entirely as a goof so I don't think that was remotely the intention at all. I also can't imagine asking someone to play in a Fate tabletop game who is not already familiar with the series.

Yeah, but I do get where you're coming from now even if I don't fully agree. And it's hard for me to say the series hasn't made jokes on that interpretation since then.

I watched the first episode of some later series, Fate: Zero or something? It started out with a young girl being left in a basement full of cockroaches which the evil bad villain informed us were 'invading her purity'. This is why I hate anime, people. When someone insists to me that 'no really this series is different!' it always ends up being crap like that. Every other person who has talked to me about the series has played up the fetishy/creepy master/servant poo poo either because they thought it was creepy, or they were very deeply into the idea.

Also on a less creepy (or is it) note, I also wish to encourage goons to sign up for TG Secret Santa. There isn't much time left! It's a thread I love every year even when I can't participate though. Everyone talks about what makes them happy and then they get presents that make them even more happy. FATE, however, is not one of them.

What kind of reading are you people doing in first place. Yeah there's messed up crap on the VNs like Avenger and Caren and the worm basement but the mind control thing isn't used for absolutenly nothing creepy at all. Hell they even aren't a guarantee like when Lancer is forced to kill himself but is such a loving tough bastard he still manages to kill the one who gave him the order in first place.

I HATE ALL FORMS OF FUN AND ENTERTAINMENT. I HATE BEAUTY. I AM GOLDJAS.
So I'm a bit late to this chat, but I've been running a Godbound campaign for close to a year now, and the "easy" way to fix most of the systems imbalances is...kind of complicated but not really? It's basically this:

There are 3 types of opponents/challenges:

Unworthy foes: Godbound do all the things to these who cares.

Worthy foes that don't do straight damage: Godbound do all the things to these except where they could defeat like an entire army of them, basically a "squad" of them should be a minor challenge, so if they try to use a miracle to kill all of them, don't let them, but let them do that to the unworthies above.

Worthy foes that do straight damage: With these guys, even if godbound are immune to their damage type, they instead take half (so if a fire godbound is immune to a fire badass monster that does straight damage, it just instead does half damage to the god bound), and if these guys use abilities that require a save, even if the godbound save, they take half the effect (so if one of these cast a 10d6 fireball spell, on save the godbound take half).

I find this fixes a lot of initial Godbound problems.

And kind of do it this way with everything.

If they are dealing with normal mortals, they basically always win.

If they are dealing with above average mortals/heroes, they will have some minor subtractions to their rolls.

If they are dealing with other godbound equivalents, they have heavy minor subtractions to make it more 50/50.

Because the vulnerability of the relatively-human summoner is the whole point? That's what all the strategy comes back to, it's the most significant game-like concept in the entire franchise, if you're not going to use it then why would you bother with all of FATE's actual baggage in the first place?

Yuuup. This would be why I started out with:

Alien Rope Burn posted:

In general, there's enough bad anime garbage in the series is that I'd largely just cull the fun aspects from it (exaggerated mythical and historical figures having ridiculous anime fights in the modern day) and trash most of the rest.

All I want is for Marie Curie to fight the Red Baron atop the Eiffel Tower with her hand-held atomic cannon versus his wing of summoned ghost biplanes. Everything else can go.

Tuxedo Catfish posted:

Well, I wouldn't bother with the baggage myself, but even the Fate creators have been chucking that bit out the window whenever it's inconvenient. I mean, sure, if you want to ape the Grail War storylines, sure, you can do that, but there's nothing sacred about it. It's just one type of story you can tell. Certainly one can argue that the creators are now more concerned with chasing down the money of spinoffs and sweet, sweet mobage money, and that they're undermined their own premise to the point of making it a farce. But at the same time, it's not like original visual novels / light novels were anything really more than amateur, unedited screed, and speak more to how desperate visual novel readers were for any level of depth at the time of its publication. But depth of lore and complicated storylines don't actually make for good writing, in my opinion, but they're really good at hiding bad writing. I think, even as dorky amateur RPG writers, what we could come up with is likely no better or worse. Hopefully better, though... and with less of the Matou family. Really, no Matous would do a lot to elevate you above Fate's writing.

Of course, nowadays it's really just becoming a salable character farm like Touhou / Vocaloids / Kancolle / etc., anyway. Whether this is good or bad is a matter of taste.
