My 10 year old Kindle is starting to bite the bullet (Kindle 4, so the arrow buttons are starting to fail) and I was looking at a Kobo Libra 2. I don't think they make a good 6 inch e-reader with buttons anywhere. My favorite thing about the Kindle was the size. A Libra 2 is 7 inches plus an extra bit on the sides to hold, and it looks like it will be pretty snug in my usual bag.

My Kobo Aura H2O finally died on me. Any suggestions for an ereader that will sync my epubs and pdfs from Google Drive? USB-C would be a major plus. I don't care about color, really. With the Kobo I was using the third-party Kobo Cloud script, which I guess I could do again, but there were some bugs with that. Trying to avoid a full tablet because I inevitably distract myself from reading.

You might try one of Onyx' Boox devices, which are basically e-paper Android devices in various sizes, but suck at doing most of the things that would probably distract you on a tablet.

KOreader is one of the few apps that actually does everything I would want an e-reading app to do, and it works beautifully on the Boox.

I checked out their site, they look interesting. If an A5-size screen weren't so expensive, I'd get one just for fabrication drawings.

Where do these devices really excel? Off the top of my head, I can think of books, comics, recipes, & manuals.

That, and the fact that they can use the official Android apps for pretty much any bookstore you were already invested in, on top of being able to use individual reader apps.

(If you're interested, they're on Best Buy's website, which is probably a lot more convenient than ordering directly from the manufacturer.)

Fun fact: Send to Kindle could always handle epub files, but in a janky way:
If you try to email an epub file directly, it would just reject it. But if you rename the file to something else that needs to be converted (e.g. .png) it would.... just realize that it's actually an epub file and convert it for you :v:

There's a 99% chance a dev just used some existing tool that could convert between a bunch of formats, and then someone higher up told them to remove support for epub files for business reasons, so they just added a filename check in front of it .

I love my Oasis. Battery life can be a little sketchy if not in airplane mode but otherwise it’s great.

Ditto what that dude said. Battery life is low with the wifi on, but since I rarely use it, pretty much not a problem.

Not gonna lie, feels weird as poo poo when you first start using it because of the weird battery bump on the back. Takes about a whole 10 mins to get used to it, and the buttons have a nice CLIK feedback.

Thanks for the advice, I have an Oasis and a third party case on the way. Is the screen decently scratch resistant? I’ve never put a screen protector on a paperwhite but they weren’t this expensive and I’ll be taking this to the beach, well the pool next to the beach, but am afraid sand might still sneak it’s way in and scratch the screen up.

I take my Oasis to the beach all the time and I have no scratches on the screen, fwiw.

Honestly the more likely scenario is a grain of sand getting stuck between the case and the screen, scratching it that way.

Return the case. I'd give you mine if I lived Stateside or anywhere you might realistically live. Very well made but I struggle to find a use for it and throw my Oasis in bags with keys, etc. Even the back still looks new.

Thanks for the offer, it’s a cheap $18 one I found. I may try it a few days without and see what I think before deciding if I want to return it.

A lot of devices feel like they're meant for a case. The Libra 2, to me, feels flimsy and unbalanced without its case on but feels absolutely perfect inside it.

I'm looking to pick up an ereader. My current library is just a few dozen epubs managed by Aldiko and exactly 1 book that I bought through the Kindle app.

I went in thinking I'd spend around $100-150ish, and I figured I'd wait to see if there's any memorial day sales this coming up weekend. After looking at some reviews, it feels like so long as I stick with a newer Kindle, Kobo, or even Onyx I can't go too wrong, is this true?

Finally got my Oasis delivered and am loving it so far. Defiantly an upgrade from my 2015 paperwhite. I’m not digging the case so I may go without it, just can’t get over the niggle that I need something protecting it, especially with my two cats roaming around the place that love to sit on any electronic I have laying around. Think I’m going to slap a tempered glass protector on it and see how that goes. Or maybe I should get a pouch to put it in when I’m not using it.

I keep mine in a cheap felt-y sleeve when I'm not suing it, and then just hold it bare when I'm using it-- I've grown to really like the ridge on the back and most cases seem to smooth that out.

I have one of these: https://bookbeau.com/collections/book-sleeves

It serves its purpose well. Pretty sure the smallest size is the one I have but you should doublecheck those dimensions.

I have a Kobo Libra 2, and when it's working it's great. But Overdrive doesn't work for poo poo far too often. I have wifi connectivity, everything is synced and up to date, but when i try to connect to Overdrive to either borrow a book or put one on hold, I get repeated "There seems to be a problem" messages and it's driving me nuts. Anyone else have a similar issue with their Kobo?

The workaround seems to be doing everything through other library apps and going through Adobe Digital Editions but it's annoying to have to figure out a bunch of extra steps when I'm supposed to be able to just access Overdrive natively.

The one time I hit that issue with Overdrive, I did a factory reset as recommended by Kobo's support and that appeared to fix it.

I set up Calibri Web on my NAS, which is pretty neat. But it got me thinking, is there any way to get my Kindle to sync with that library? Obviously there isn't going to be an official way, but apparently there's a way to jailbreak these things.

https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/mrw76j/tutorial_calibre_in_docker_with_autosend_to_kindle/
exists, but not sure I'd follow it. The idea is kind of interesting though maybe you could use linuxserver's docker overlays to add a module or even just a filewatcher in another container.

Oh cool, I didn't even think about the emailing option.

But yeah I'm also looking at hacking something else together. I have a few containers running but I'm not super familiar with the whole docker thing so I'm not exactly sure what you're suggesting. Still, that's probably going to be the easier part, I think the bigger issue would be how to get it onto the Kindle. I did some light googling and it seems like it should be possible to run arbitrary code or scripts on the jailbroken Kindle, but from what I've seen so far, there's nothing already existing that would just download stuff automatically from a network share or http. So it'd be down to how much time I want to waste instead of just connecting it through USB once every few weeks :downs:

I can't help on the firmware but I have had Kindles freeze and require both a power cord and 2+ minutes of holding down the power button to come back. I don't give up on holding down the power button on those after the first time it worked

Just understand that jailbreaking kindles is a lot more difficult than your phone. Amazon is very aggressive on patching holes and blocking downgrading firmware.

Hope that it goes better than when my 7(?)th gen paperwhite froze and had to be reset like that, I found out shortly after take off of the first of two ~10 hour flights, and after it came back to life the library was blank.

At least the files were still on the device and I was able to get them to show again after arriving at our destination by connecting it to a computer and re-copying the files.

Amazon let's you email an address and kindle compatible files in the attachment for that email show up on your device.

Combine that with a separate docker container (similar to but not exactly like https://github.com/gkarthiks/file-watcher ) And you could have something that says, 'When an azw or mobi file appears in the directories under calibre, email it to my kindle.' And that would be a separate container than the one actually running calibre just that it happens to have a directory mount in common.
