The Strange Origins Of Trump’s Hydroxychloroquine Obsession

On March 11, cryptocurrency investors Gregory Rigano and James Todaro mused about coronavirus treatments and potential death tolls on Twitter to their then-small number of followers. Bye, who says he has been living in the Wudang Mountains in central China for the past few years and formerly interviewed tech “thought leaders” for his startup, responded to one of Todaro’s tweets about the virus.

“Chloroquine will keep most people out of hospital. The US hasn’t learned about that yet,” Bye replied to Todaro.
...
On March 13, Rigano and Todaro touted chloroquine in a self-published, non-peer-reviewed Google doc falsely claiming to be affiliated with Stanford University School of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences and the University of Alabama, Birmingham School of Medicine.(All three institutions told HuffPost that they had no connection to the document, and Google later removed it from its platform for violating its terms of service.)
...

The Google doc, with its grand claims and the help of its false affiliation with Stanford and other institutions, quickly went viral and was tweeted out to millions by prominent venture capitalists and Tesla CEO Musk ― none of whom appeared to vet its methods or sources. Fox News and other right-wing media jumped on the paper and touted the drug as a potential quick fix for the virus. Fox News host and informal Trump adviser Tucker Carlson had Rigano on his prime-time show, with Rigano falsely identified as an adviser to Stanford and claiming “what we’re here to announce is the second cure to a virus of all time.”
...
Bye has repeatedly tweeted anti-Semitic ramblings, has replied to white nationalists such as Richard Spencer and once tweeted a link to an Australian website that has promoted Holocaust denial. In one thread, he complained about Jews taking over “major power centers” and speculated about “Jewish verbal IQ” while asking if another user had “even read Mein Kampf?” He has stated “my hobby is researching Jews. It is very enjoyable.”

Bye also talked about chloroquine in late March on the podcast of Jean-Francois Gariepy, a Canadian white nationalist who The Daily Beast reported is accused of luring and trying to impregnate a developmentally disabled teenager while his U.S. immigration status was being contested.

“I’m not a white nationalist, not at all. I have a lot of friends who are and I like white nationalists, but I’m not one. I learned from them because there’s important ideas there that we need to understand,” Bye told Gariepy. Bye claimed that he researched chloroquine “using philosophy” and that coronavirus would “destroy feminism.”

Lipstick Apathy

quote:

The self-described “Boogaloo Boi” had a carefully laid-out plan: In order to spark an uprising that would lead to the imposition of martial law and thus the next civil war, he would ambush police officers responding to a fake domestic-violence call, who were to be stealthily surrounded by armed militiamen, “and the officers would have to put their pistols on the ground or get shot by the count of ten.” He also “hoped we don’t have to put them down, but I will do it if I have to.”

On May 8, Christian Ferguson of Cleveland, Ohio, performed a “dry run” of his plan with a couple of men he thought were fellow militiamen at Cuyahoga National Park. The men, however, were informants, and later that day the FBI arrested Ferguson and charged him with plotting to kidnap or kill police officers in order to steal their equipment. He is 20 years old.

[...]

The affidavit helps describe Ferguson’s grander scheme as well: His hope being that the incident would spark a rush of fellow “Boogaloo” militiamen conducting similar operations, eventually inducing the government to declare martial law amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This in turn, he believed, would lead to the hoped-for broader civil war in which “Patriots” would overturn established authorities, obtain revenge on their “traitor” fellow citizens, and establish a new authoritarian nationalist regime.

Ferguson discussed other plans for attacking police and government authorities, including one involving homemade mustard gas and pipe bombs. He also believed his group would need money from a sponsor in order to purchase military-style ammunition—after all, he said, he barely had enough money to buy a pistol.

Obtaining material was Ferguson’s first objective: “We also can’t afford martial law to be installed until I know all my pilots are fully armed and armored up,” he wrote.

When planning the ambush—which was to be set up by anonymous female caller reporting a domestic-abuse situation at the Cuyahoga park—he discussed surrounding the officers and taking their gear, but shooting them at the first sign of resistance. In most of the scenarios he discussed, the officers wound up dead, though he wanted one of them to remain alive to “limp home and tell law enforcement that the Spartans are out here hunting us.”

While performing the “dry run” for his plan, he told the informants that he could imagine hearing a “dumbass” police officer “plea and cry ‘I have a family.’” He also talked about being sure to leave a Spartan calling card on the bodies of the dead officers.

Ferguson believed the attack would help recruit new members to the “75th Spartans,” as well as inspire similar groups to form and to strike police similarly. The plan to kill police officers while letting one live "with our calling card” was a device to draw media coverage, notably Fox News, the affidavit said.

“We still are building numbers but this will get patriots and future Spartans interested,” he wrote.

Weird how the fbi is suddenly so good at stopping them when they target cops.

I remember that one of the shooter's parents have never testified or been interviewed and moved away immediately after the killings happened, unlike the parents of the other shooter, who shared a lot of information about their home life. After learning about the shooters' Hitler obsession, I wondered if maybe they were white supremacists and didn't want anyone noticing the connections between the environment their kid was raised in and his crimes.
