How does Schilling manage a 6.48 ERA despite striking out so many? I imagine his control is also pretty great since it was in real life, is he just giving up a ton of dingers?

Alright, I made a whole bunch of personnel changes for the Phillies, hopefully to jump start the offense and give Marshall and Rhodes some more innings.

it is kind of a combination of how everyone built their teams. some folks chose short left or right porches and loaded up their lineups with guys who hit long to those fields, some folks chose lots of elite contact hitters and have huge outfields for them to hit into. not to mention most of the games elite base dealers are out there doing their thing also. there just isn't an easy out...ever. except for possibly Todd hundley.

there are definitely lots of home runs per game (my very quick mental math suggests about 1.6 per game, as opposed to the all-time record of 1.4 per game last season) but they have to deal with everything else at the same time.

but really that ERA is just a bit above the league average which isnt terrible considering his IP. his ratios make it seem like that might even be a bit high so he could be due for a good second half.

My pitchers are allowing a .246 BA and a OBP of .302

Team ERA is 4.11

As a comparison, the 2019 leader was LA at 3.37, but 4.11 would be about 5th. Fairly proud of it.

I planned it, kinda. I picked a pitcher's park, made sure to grab pitchers who had a WHIP no higher than 1.10, didn't give up lots of dingers or walks, and made sure key defensive spots were filled by elite defenders. Bill James, while flawed as an analyst, had a very salient point about pitching: pitchers can only do so much, even if they throw smoke.

Putting a good D and a park that benefits your pitchers behind them helps. And really, even then, this could have, and could still blow up in my face because I didn't place a great emphasis on power.

Yeah, I looked at the sortable stats and there are multiple pitchers giving up 4+ dongs per 9. Which is gonna hurt the ol' ERA no matter how good your K/BB

All Star Game, and the second half begins!

The Phillies train looks unstoppable.

Close races in both leagues for both pennant and wild card.

Week 14 AL Player of the Week: Jimmie Foxxxx, 8 for 16 with 4 dingers.
Week 14 NL Player of the week: John Henry Lloyd, 12 for 20 with no dingers.

Home Run Derby

Round 1:

A late surge by Bonds put him ahead with about 45 seconds to go, then he ripped off 5 straight dingers.

McGwire/Sosa went down to the last 10 seconds. Sosa's 14th was opposite field.

Round 2:

Bonds and Foxxxx with a surprisingly mediocre showing...perhaps tired from round 1? Gibson looked like he had an easy win waiting for him.

Round 3:

And then Foxxxx went off.

All Star Game

Ironically enough, the ASG in our stratospherically scoring league was a low-scoring nailbiter, with the NL not taking a lead until the 7th. Congratulations Vladimir Guerrero, MVP of the most talent-laden baseball game ever played!

So as I do these daily updates, I always look at that firs entry on "fielding leaders" mainly because it just catches my eye. It has turned into kind of a "survivor" thing...as guys make errors, their names drop off. Hank Aaron was atop the list for a long time as he was first alphabetically, but he made an error a few weeks ago. Then it was Andre Dawson for a bit. Now in late July, there are only 3 error-free guys left: Al Kaline, Joe Mauer, and Christian Yelich. Ironically enough, two of those dudes are not exactly renowned for their glove work.

Anyway, I'm really curious who the LAST MAN STANDING will be. I think I'm gonna go with Yelich. It would be impressive as hell if Mauer does it, he has over 700 chances so far. Has a catcher ever had an error-free season?
