So I'm less than a year out from my potential ETS date, though I want to stay in and make captain and then make captain pay for like 6 months to a year before getting out. That's about the time frame for the amount of time I can stay in as a captain before ETSing or having to PCS to the career course. I want to stay in the Seattle area and probably go to grad school, which I've PMed a few of you guys about. Thing is I have no idea what I would even want to go back to school for. I mainly want to get out and not take a drastic pay cut. I know Amazon, Microsoft and Boeing are the 3 big companies here in the Seattle area but I'm not sure what kind of jobs I should look into with a background as an combat arms officer with a potential masters degree.

Honestly man, it's all in how you spin your experience and education. Step #1 is going to be actually committing to getting the gently caress out. Step #2 is hitting up the resume guy over in SA Mart, because he's good at it, his prices are reasonable, and the resume ACAP will make you churn out is a colossal turdy waste of time. The easiest thing to spin your experience into would probably be operations or project management. Or daycare. Amazon loves them some military, but you'd most likely be stuck as a picking/packing floor supervisor, which pays on the dick end of the scale. Edit: 21 days to terminal, job already in the bag. People with your background go on to be lawyers, doctors, politicians, consultants, finance bros, sustainable development professionals, architects, writers, gay porn actors, scientists, IT guys, anything really. What you need is to figure out what kind of work it is you want to be doing. You have a little time to determine that, and you should start reaching out to people in industries you think you'd like to work in for the long haul. Ask what's good and bad about their work, and what they regret. Having military officer combat arms experience is basically a wildcard; you can make it count towards anything you want. You just need to figure out what that is so you can tailor your grad school applications, internships/fellowships, and cover letters appropriately. Don't commit to a path before you know where you want to end up, though.

Ended up getting an acceptance letter today from the grad school that denied me a couple months ago I'm hesitant about asking whether or not it's a mistake. I'd already changed tracks to go for an easy engineering management master's at a different school.

First, unless you go back to school, or you sell your skills into a general "management" position, you're going to take a big ole pay cut. Career fairs have been a non-starter for me: recruiters are looking for entry level talent to fill out their ranks; jobs that pay at the O-3 level are usually internal hires or headhunted or not posted publicly, and most will almost certainly require experience in the field. No one is looking to swoop randos off the street to pay $65k a year unless they have a specialized skillset. Second, have a back up plan. I was 90% of the way to a hire I was confident about, and let my other leads lapse. This was a huge mistake, and I've lost a lot of ground on my goals in the interim.

Also you just gotta go retrain. Being combat arms sucks rear end, you've done nothing anyone cares about. Here's what happened to my salary after I got out: 0$ (lived off unemployment & GI Bill) -> 45k -> 55k -> 72k -> 87k -> six figures (in the Midwest, so p good) Took five years, three job changes, and a couple promotions. Also I was enlisted, so kinda different but I knew enough officers to know you can either go make money off of oil or be an assistant manager at Lowes. After getting my bachelors degree and working on my IT skills my military experience became invaluable on my resume. Getting out it was a total liability cause it has no relevance to anything. Good luck dude. Just plan on GI Bill and unemployment it's sweet as gently caress.

Largely speaking there's very little direct value in a combat arms background when transitioning to civilian enterprise. It's not like you were in logistics, where you can practically turn in the uniform for a suit and do the same job for three times the pay. You weren't intelligence so you can't get hounded by contract companies. You weren't high enough rank to get some good business connections that a consultancy will pay you for to get a competitive advantage. But, as others have said, it's not useless either. Think of it as an add-on value. You meet the educational requirements for a job AND have the Army stuff. That's when it's useful. 'Hey we've got two similar enough candidates but one of them was in the Army as an officer for 6 years' - that's where you get the edge.

The Netflix documentary Icarus is worth a watch. What starts off as a fairly benign look into one guy's attempt at doping for cycling becomes a much larger story suddenly. Clearly the production had gold handed to them midway through filming.
