Get one built in the 70's, no one gives a poo poo if you chop one of them up. In fact I think most bug enthusiasts would be happy to see it happen.

I used to do the 1000 mile San Antonio - Des Moines run a few times a year in one shot. drat near killed me several times thanks to just how boring Kansas and Oklahoma are to drive through.

It still blows my mind how little Aston's design philosophy has changed and how little they get called out for it.

Although he's probably doing it for laughs, it's funny to hear Clarkson rip Hammond a new one for Porsche's design laziness, while declaring every new Aston the most beautiful car IN THE WORLD.

Yea, this is pretty much why I stopped watching Top Gear. There's an older Top Gear clip where he reviews a Corolla which out-accelerates a Golf and outhandles pretty much everything else available for the money. In the end he says he doesn't care because it looks boring. Of course, the Aston on the other hand, has an 'iconic' design so it gets a free pass, even though it's only 'iconic' because they haven't changed it for 20 years. The E-Type Jag? That's an iconic design. I wouldn't mind if they kept making those until the sun exploded. It's in a different league to anything Aston Martin have ever made.

I remember watching this scene years and years ago, and thinking a tarted up pick up was a strange choice. Not realising that of the era, if you needed to quickly acquire a fast vehicle by devious means, it would have been as obvious as nicking a Sierra Cosworth in 90's Essex.

I've always thought the DB7/Vanquish era cars looked like poo poo. They have the worst, most awkward front and general proportions. The DB9-onwards cars are pretty stunning though.

Compare:

I think 90's era supercars have mostly aged really, really badly and the ones that still look like knock-outs are the exception.

I always thought the DB7 looked like poo poo in pictures. I actually really like it in person. I don't know why.

Same with things like 80's-90's Bentleys - I think they look crap in pictures, but when I saw one in person, I thought it looked great.

E39's in general still look phenomenal, as do E46 M3's and B7 RS4's. The pinnacle of the boxy car design. Now everything has bullshit swooping curves and ridiculous angles and over-styling everywhere. What happened to subtlety? Why can't something looking quietly muscular instead of like a pouncing lion or whatever the gently caress?

I'd say the Integrale was the high point of boxy design but I'm slightly biased.

Agreed!

Though, personally I just wish pop-up headlights would come back in fashion. The Toyota 86 has the most comically overaggressive headlight design (it's literally a scowling pair of eyes) and it still somehow looks a bit boring. Now imagine that thing with pop-ups! That's the Japanese sports car revival I want to see :getin:
