My "if I won the Euromillions" pick after sorting out myself and my family and friends is I'd buy this derelict office block at the end of my street (which a local kid fell off and died recently), turn it into decent flats and make them available to homeless or otherwise precarious people at a peppercorn rent to enable them to get their poo poo together with a safe place to be and an address etc. No obligation to move out at any particular point. e: fuctifino posted:If I won £100m, I'd spend most of it on property and become a landlord

Does anyone have experience with old unibody macbook keyboards? Spilled a small drop of coffee on the right hand side (cursor keys mainly). It seemed fine when I wiped it down but now for some reason the left shift, alt and ctrl keys seem dead (external USB keyboard works so I reckon it's definitely hardware). Can't do the PRAM / SMC reset as it's now running Linux. Hoping it isn't buggered as was thinking I could maybe squeeze a few more years of life out of it.

A great ambition. I've often pondered similar and wondered what the absolute minimum you could make on renovating/building homes is to keep perpetually making good affordable housing as a non-profit. That said, I have never actually bought a Euromillions ticket.

If I win hundreds of millions I’d set up a fund to just give money to homeless people. We all know that giving them money does a lot more to help than any other measure and is probably cheaper to boot, I could probably end homelessness in Leeds and provide a concrete example of what could be done if the government committed funds to it

Jedit posted:Well of course you can't put the sig on the same loving line as the separator. That's what the separator is for. Well that was where the confusion came in because it *seemed* so obvious that quite a few clients didn't actually check for the newline directly after the dashdashspace or for it being the only thing on the line, causing hilarious hijinks everywhere from programming language discussion to literature quotes (and also leading some wags to use a dashdashspace in their From: lines, making it impossible for them to be quoted properly). Then later Windows clients got confused between ANSI and ASCII newlines (a problem that still exists to this day), which made it all the more confusing. I tell you Usenet was just a laugh a minute back in the day, I still chuckle when I remember posting to demon.local with a single space in the 5th line of my .sig - they never knew, teehee!

Just to be clear, 'special' is or was used by young folk as a particular kind of slur in this country as well, right? Also where's 'peppercorn' from, like I get the use in the two times people used it above but what's the origin

Yes, special means 'special' here too And its a peppercorn because peppercorns are very small, it's only intended as a symbolic demonstration of a financial relationship and not intended to be paid

Chubby Henparty posted:Just to be clear, 'special' is or was used by young folk as a particular kind of slur in this country as well, right? As explained it is literally 'a peppercorn' - still used today for exceptionally long leases. It's because there has to be some sort of 'consideration' for a lease - ground rent. For many flat leases it is perhaps £100 pa or £500 pa or whatever. For extremely long leases eg mine is 999 years (I think!) it is essentially zero but for technical legal reasons it can't BE zero so it's a peppercorn. Noone's sent the bailiffs in for my peppercorn yet, though I do have a box in the kitchen It's sort of like the difference between 'exempt from VAT' and 'VAT rate 0%' both are the same in effect but there is a technical difference - I'm not well versed in VAT but I think if it's set at 0% it could go up, whereas exempt means it is really 0.

So if I make shirts as a VAT registered business, I pay 20% VAT on the cloth and thread, claim that back, and charge 20% VAT on the finished shirts and submit that to HMRC as part of my accounts and tax payments, but if I make children's shirts I pay 20% VAT on the cloth and thread, claim that back, and charge 0% VAT on the finished shirts, which I record in my accounts. VAT exempt goods I don't record any tax for the sale of the goods (there's a difference between not recording tax and recording zero tax) but also can't claim any credit for VAT paid on inputs to produce it.
