I'm not really so bothered about us getting rid of our expensive toys, since diminishing British power projection's probably better for the world over all, but it certainly does rankle me that it got fixed up on the taxpayer's purse then sold off for a dubious (since it's gonna be refitted again prior to sale) profit we'll see none of.

OK here's a question thread: Was it Corbyn who shitcanned all of the UK's anti-submarine aircraft? Because history says that of all things to shitcan, that was pretty dumb. While the government is working on replacements, right now it rents ASW patrol when the nuclear deterrent subs leave port from France and Canada

The world will never be safe so long as Britain has a navy.

IMO there's two directions the Royal Navy can go (not including "abolish the Royal Navy"). And you can only do one because you don't have enough money or sailors to do both. one is to have amphibious assault ships (like HMS Ocean), frigates, submarine hunters, maritime search and rescue planes, etc. -- the stuff that you would need if you're content with putting around the North Sea and you also want to occasionally move some Royal Marines around. or, two, you could scrap all that and spend everything on two aircraft carriers and the supporting ships for a single carrier group. Because you need two carriers to have a single group, since half of the year one carrier will be in port for maintenance. guess which one the Royal Navy picked.

Here's the great thing about this, though. If you can't do anything except sail this carrier group around, then what are you doing? Mainly you're supporting the U.S. Navy, which is similar to how the Commonwealth navies got set up by Britain when they went independent. i.e. the Royal Navy will be just another American battle group, except the sailors will have different accents and wear fancier uniforms.

Nebakenezzer posted:The two carriers thing I get, but doesn't the QE II class only support eight fighters? Official figures say anywhere between 40 to 48, which seems about right for its size relative to a Nimitz. I think any shortfall could be blamed on the UK not actually having enough F-35s to fill-out the full complement.
