today I noticed some sort of nascar across the street. so i took my lunch break and went to check it out.

turns out it was a sign for a car show! so I took the rest of my lunch break and went to check it out.

I should have asked that guy to pop the trood for a photo of those weird spindly intake runners and suck-through turbocarber.

I would say this is a pretty good rolling ad for a towing company with the slogan "anywhere, anytime".

Offroaders do, occasionally, drive on pavement, and it's nice to have a vehicle that stays level in those circumstances. Usually they can be disengaged relatively easily (some newer I wanna say Land Rovers can do it electronically on the fly) for off-road articulation.

There's a bunch around, but they were mainly built for the Canadian market. They're almost as common as their Ford equivalents of the same era around here, and restored examples are about 50/50 'cause the Merc is a bit more desirable.
There's an early-'60s M350 dually sitting in the yard of a heavy-haul outfit I did tires for back in the day. I'd have bought it but I just don't have the means to take something like that on.

Oh yeah, I believe they're still all over Canada, but I've seen precisely one M-100 in the wild ever, and it was a mid-50s model.

Yep! The electronic swaybar is nice compared to manual disconnects (I don't have to crawl on the ground), but you still have to be on flat-ground for the mechanism to pop out. Nowadays most people use Currie antirock swaybars that twist, no disconnecting required at all plus there's no complex contraption involved that will break at the worst moment.

Electronic lockers are fine, sometimes they struggle to disengage until you've driven for a bit but they work fine. Air lockers are still more popular because having a compressor onboard is pretty a standard requirement for tires and the ARB lockers are pretty great.

Yeah while they were available in the states they weren't advertised much if at all and you had to special order if you wanted one. I'd imagine a good number of the M-trucks in the US are CDM trucks that crossed the border at this point.

Toyota Land Cruisers and their Lexus equivalents also have electronically adjustable swaybars (KDSS) that make them almost as capable.

The 200 series has a cunning hydraulic system that lets one swaybar mount per axle 'collapse' if shocks on opposite corners are compressing/extending. If one is compressing and the other extending, the car is going around a corner and the swaybar linkage remains solid.

A comparison not many people are making (in the USA at least) because of the Land Cruiser's $80k base price.

I'm just bitter that Land Cruisers start at $80k in the US. Although I have to also go with my gut instinct that it's just another expensive system that will hit a rock and break at the worst time. Keep it simple, cars.

So last month I met up with my family who were in Nashville for the week. While I was there, we visited the Lane Motor Museum, which is this little museum specializing in (of all things) old foreign cars (mostly euro / British), as well as a handful of race cars, a kickass micro car exhibit, and some motorcycles / bicycles as well, although my cell phone camera died before I could snap any of those. No ropes around anything (except maybe a few of the most special cars) so you can go up to almost all of them and peek in the windows, etc. They also have a thing going where a large percentage of the cars there are in running condition and roadworthy - there's a small garage on-site that you can look into where they fire up the cars every now and then. They were running some loud wacky propeller driven car in there when I was there. Everyone reading this thread should definitely make time to go if you're in the area. Image dump ahoy!

There were quite a few Lotuseseses

Inside the garage I was talking about (pardon the glare on the glass). That big red thing with the huge propeller on the back is the one they fired up when I was there.

This Citroen had two steering wheels and could be driven in either direction. :psyduck:

I would daily drive this all day long, but I'm weird like that.

Some nutty old Saab race car - this one was a 2-stroke, IIRC

Amphicar!

Some crazy spacevan thing with doors that slid away from each other.

Inside that SM. The interior was nuts.

I cant even...just :psyduck: of all the ways to generate thrust to move your car down the road, a giant loving wooden propeller blasting gale force winds at you the entire time would probably be at the bottom of my list. Also, my heart goes out to the poor gently caress who was in charge of actually carving / balancing that propeller. :haw: Apparently, this thing is in running shape and is legal to use on some country's (France?) roads. That video screen behind it had a looping video of someone driving it. You can see the wing of motorcycles / bicycles that I didn't take pics of behind it.

That propeller car in the garage while they were running it.

This little guy was just stuck in the middle there. My brother texting in the background. He's not much of a car person :saddowns:

I don't know what the hell that white thing with the skis, rotary paddle, and prop was for exactly. All I know is I want to drive it on snowy hills for the rest of my life.

I can't remember the story behind this one exactly - some hand built thing IIRC

Wanna be that douche who drives a car with a mirror finish in heavy traffic on a sunny day

There's a big Nissan plant in the area, so there were a few "normal" cars there, like these three. If I remember right, the truck and the blue car had less than 100 miles on them. I think the Sentra in the back had a few hundred. I might be mixing up those numbers though.

Microcars!! :neckbeard:

:gay:

And of course, a Peel P50 :3 This car is so ridiculously small in person.

Tatra chassis

So, we're on our way out, and the guy goes "Hey, didja see the garage?" :haw:
There is a garage off to the side, which I thought was just for overflow parking, but nope. You can park in there, but there were overflow / large cars, and even a few parts cars (??!!) in there as well. Also, it's where they had most of the old military iron.

There was also a ginormous military thing out back that looked like some kind of beach lander - boat type hull, 7 foot tall wheels. My phone didn't save the pics I took of that unfortunately. The battery was beyond dead at that point.

I know what you're getting at but a Land Cruiser with the 5.7l engine is going to cost at least 80k everywhere else in the world, usually much more, so there's not much to complain about in that sense. In some countries you can get one with a V6 for less, but in the US you can get a 4Runner with the V6 for the above mentioned $35k and it's substantially the same car. The KDSS system is relatively simple really, all it is is just small shocks that the roll bar mount to and I don't see how hitting a rock is going to break it any more than a truck without the system, it seems like to me that the default failure mode would just set the car to "offroad" mode all the time.

EDIT: Welp I've just talked myself into buying a 4Runner.

Not shocks- Hydraulic cylinders. Its a stunningly simple system too- replace one front and rear swaybar links with two small hydraulic cylinders and then link the outlet ports together top/top and bottom/bottom. When your going round a corner, the whole car leans to one side, the hydraulic cylinders "lock" and the swaybar takes over.

Offroad, front wheel up and rear wheel down on the same side, one cylinder is extending, one is compression and fluid flows between the two essentially unhooking the swaybars.

As for landcruiser prices- they are loving expensive EVERYWHERE, and the drat things hold their value. The only 200 series the US gets is the V8 petrol "Sahara" grade, and thats AU$122,000 onroad, with the 4.6L V8 petrol. If you want the 5.7L V8, you have to look at the Lexus LX570 and thats AU$165,968 onroad.

Color me impressed if "running" actually means that the car can move more than a few feet under its own power. We're talking about a 70s rotary engine, designed and built by the French.
