Goodpancakes posted:Is the Sword of Truth book the one with like 200 pages of self insert BDSM porn in it? IIRC it's the one where there are these women who have the power to touch someone and have them turn into a mindlessly obedient slave forever, and they use that power in place of the death penalty because if you're innocent then at least you can have your name cleared because you can't lie any more once you've been lobotomised, so they ask you if you did it and you tell the truth. Also, they can normally control the power, but not during sex, but they can't be celibate because the power is hereditary so they need to lobotomise some men to have sex with so they don't die off. Oh, and they have their lobotomised husbands kill all their male children because if any man had this power they'd abuse it, only women can be trusted with it.

Yes but that's not where the BDSM comes in. The bad guy in the first book keeps an army of dominatrix who wield pain dildos.

I keep getting Terry Brooks and Terry Goodkind mixed up because I read both the Shannara series and some of the Sword of Truth series when I was younger. Surely one would never guess that the wholesome fella pictured below is a creepy sadomasochistic misogynist / libertarian poster boy.

I only finished the first book because I wanted to see just how bad it was going to get. I clocked out of giving any kind of a poo poo about the story when the villain buried a kid up to his neck, then fed him concrete that he magically made taste like pie. Spoilers, it gets worse.

Oh, and they have their lobotomised husbands kill all their male children because if any man had this power they'd abuse it, only women can be trusted with it. Not even the worst part. One of the later books had the main character kidnapped taken to the middle of the evil empire so that he can be shown how it''s not really so evil. The place is a hellhole where inefficient communism is keeping the common man down and welfare recipients are leeching off of the few productive members of society. The hero stages a capitalist revolution by showing everyone the glory of the free market. I'm a little hazy on the ending of the series but I'm pretty sure it involved the evil emperor being a big fan of a deathmatch version of rugby. The hero lets himself get captured and enslaved as a gladiator in this sport. Then knowing that the best teams get to challenge the evil emperor's personal team, he guides his team up the tournament bracket to first place. Then he plays so well and the emperor becomes more obvious in his attempts to win the big game, that the crowd starts a soccer riot, giving the hero the chance he needs to win the book.

It was something like he wanted to travel to some spirit realm but you needed the soul of someone recently deceased. Only you can't just murder someone because the dead guy has to have complete trust in you. So he took care of this young kid for a while, feeding him and hanging out and stuff. Then once the kid trusted him he swapped out the food with acid or poison or something that would kill him before he realized he had been betrayed.

I read the first book of the series in highschool (for some reason it was in the school library - along with Robert Heinlein amongst other questionable choices) and what I wrote is one of the few things I remember about it (though the kid being force-fed concrete is familiar now that I'm reminded of it).

I say this everytime discussion of the book comes up: Don't. Don't discuss it. Even saying how bad it gets might get someone to read it out of curiosity. Just say " Don't read it. Not even as a joke. Not even to make fun of it. Just forget it exists." I read the books up to the point where he gains all the communists respect by fixing the back porch steps. It got so heavy handed that Ayn Rand herself would put the book down. I wish I could could forget this tripe.

A friend who is a libertarian got fed up with the series because it was too over the top Randian. I gave up because nothing progressed. I think I read eight or nine of the books, and after the first one, it is the protagonist and antagonist never coming into contact, but supposedly getting stronger. The series a literary DBZ episode of powering up and grunting "Who is is John Galt?"
