Honestly, the fact that they're making a battleground for the next is promising for this game having a brief moment of entertainment again.

I can't decide if it's because they only just figured out what players like, or because in the face of falling numbers they've had to resort to making what they always knew players *ugh* liked.

On top of that, balance wise the game is back to being pretty close to what a lot of us old spergs considered the golden age of STO, immediately prior to Delta. While STO will never be a good game, it is no longer an actively terrible game, and most of us are just burned out on the F2P grind.

Really the only thing missing is an active battlezone and Breach. Breach is still the epitome of fun STF design and also the epitome of Cryptic's "The Federation in STO commits a shitload of warcrimes" philosophy, so it's always gonna be the best unless this mirror poo poo literally involves nuking Bajor or something.

Frankly, it's not back to Legacy of Romulus levels. The spec grind has been mitigated a bit to the point that it's not too bad now, especially with the admiralty system thing hitting soon, but it's still a painful multi-week timesink to try and get alts to a reasonable level. The upgrade system means the dilithium and credit costs of getting decent gear has risen astronomically, and even more damning the already too-drat-expensive spaceboats are not up to $30 a pop, let alone the surcharge for the obsolete older versions if you actually want to use their gimmick. The timesinks in general of getting a character up to spec is pretty damning if you're starting now too, between reputations, specializations, R&D schools, fleet credits, etc... it's nothing that was bad if you were keeping up with it as things were added but it's a huge wall right now. And queues are still loving dead due to the disaster that was Delta Rising's launch. And there's a lot of other lingering issues that have become more prominent over the years, like the inability to reclaim fleet/lockbox ships, or how the rate of ship releases and limited time promo releases has been noticeable accelerating and how worrying this seems for the game's health.

I mean I sound like a bitter rear end in a top hat and I kinda am since I'm still pissed that Cryptic hosed the game, but it has improved a lot the past few months (the bridge officer improvements alone were too drat long overdue) and hopefully having actual content that people do will get things back to a playable state. I don't actually hold out hope, but I'm willing to be surprised I guess? :geno: And I don't mean to discourage new folks. The core of the gameplay systems are still fun and unique, and the best parts of the game (making hilariously horrible costumes and trolling uptight spergs) are as good as they've ever been.

Psycho Landlord

I've been playing on and off the past couple weeks, and have legit had no issues getting into pretty much any of the queues. They were certainly dead for a good while, but that appears to have been rectified. What's more, while the upgrade system is a massive dil sink if you want the top end poo poo, the game is still perfectly playable with Mk XII's in every slot. They added in the Mk XIV without actually adjusting enemy levels too much. You don't need the top end poo poo to have fun in this game. It's not a requirement for anything, beyond looking rich. Granted, that's a noble goal and it helps piss off pubbies, which is the real endgame of STO, but if some new dude just wants to buzz around in spaceships and look at explosions there's no point in going into a rant about the system because he literally won't have to worry about it while playing the content he wants to play.

T6 ships, however, are necessary, and those being $30 is pretty loving annoying. I mean, STO's ship prices were always retarded, but just tacking an extra 5 bucks on the new endgame level ships you'll need to keep up is pretty lovely.

Unfortunately that's what every MMO is like.

There's no motivation to innovate because churn gets enough people in the door and spending on the cash shops to sustain existing properties.

Plus thanks to the ST license all PWE really needs to do to generate cash in STO is release new skins of existing iconic ships smeared with rancid nerd cum and pubbies gobble them up with poo poo eating grins.

I admit most of the reason I'm salty about the game is that my RL friends have quit playing, and most of them gave T6 ships as the reason why. Obsoleting their entire roster and costing more to replace it? It was just so transparently money-grubbing.

It's not even the ships that are required, it's the traits. The ISA DPS is still held by a t5u Tulwar after all, and the old useful t5 ships are fine for end-game content if you know how to build them. But you won't get anywhere without those traits, and there's too many optimal traits locked behind a $30 paywall.

Good ship but you really want the ship trait which only comes with the cstore version. Owning the cstore version will also let you get the better fleet version for 1 FSM instead of 4. So buy some contraband, get some klank alts to level 11 (klanks are the quickest to get doffing unlocked on and you can use the klanks to farm contra) and start grinding dil.

It's been a lot of fun playing through the huge backlog of story missions, after being away for two full years. I've got enough high-end old gear that I'm just enjoying flying around in my super-Excelsior and being a starship again.

Iconian grind, though, is there any way to get Gateway to Gre'thor quickplay be less dick-slamming than it is? Gre'thor was advertised as the 'easy way' to get Iconian marks, but it's always me in my old bugship slamming my face against the Dreadnought over and over, at the end. I mean, my equipment is two years out of date, but I've still got respectable DPS and this is normal for crying out loud, it shouldn't take half an hour to get this done.

You misunderstand me, I'm not enjoying the story, that hilariously contrived mess of writing, inasmuch as the story missions, as in flying around shooting things in the face in new venues. When I packed it in, I was literally running the same fleet defense and ISE and such instances over and over again, identical every time. So, the new story missions are at least interesting in that there's new poo poo to look at and blow up. No big surprise on the damage thing, though.

No it doesn't, the majority of the mission is fixed-time segments that you can't speed up no matter how much DPS you poo poo you. This is a huge issue with all the post-DR space queues, probably because Cryptic got pissed with people blowing through ISA in two minutes. It's still a way better queue than Herald Sphere though.

Brotherhood of the Sword (the ground queue) is the one you can blow through with a premade. I really recommend just doing that unless you're absolutely allergic to ground combat.

All Captains who log in during this timeframe will be able to contribute to global efforts to rebuild the quadrant in the aftermath of our war against the Iconians. The level of contributions made by all Captains will be matched by special reward events that will unlock for everyone the following week.

For the first week, running from October 8th at 9AM PDT, until October 15th at 9AM PDT, Captains can aid the recovery efforts by completing fleet projects and earning Fleet Credits. Based on the contributions made by all Captains during this week, a Bonus Reputation Mark Week will be unlocked for the following week, with a bonus of 25%, 50% or 75%.

For the second week, running from October 15th at 9AM PDT, until October 22nd at 9AM PDT, the Restoration Initiative will switch focus to track completed Duty Officer Assignments. The work of all Captains towards this weekly goal will unlock a Bonus Experience Week that will offer a bonus 50%, 100% or 150% to all Skill Points and Expertise earned

The third week will not track any actions taken by Captains and will only be the reward event unlocked from the previous week efforts. A progress bar located above your mission tracker will show the current state of those efforts to rebuild and what rewards have been unlocked so far.

That depends on what you mean by necessary. A halfway decent T5U ship, properly equipped, will still out-DPS most pubbies using T6 ships. T6 or a top-end T5U with decent ship traits is probably necessary for elite space queues but for normal and advanced you can do just fine with almost any T5U. My tac guy out-DPSs most pubbies in a garbage T5U D'Kyr.
