That one program where they interview the regional outreach coordinator for the [insert terrible backronym] coalition and discuss all the problems they will not be solving because the dialogue and the conversation and the narrative don't line up with the conversation's dialogue narrative, not to mention the narrative's dialogue conversation. I think I can referee the PHC fight. As a fan from early on, I have to admit that it has been listless, low energy, and phoned in for about a decade. People get old. There's simply no comparison between a show from 1995 and one from 2015. The pacing, the timing, everything is off. Still, I'm not aware of a better storyteller than GK, especially when he was in top form. If you're judging the show based solely on episodes of recent years, I have to agree. Wait Wait isn't completely terrible, but there must be half a dozen knockoffs that air on Saturday, and their panelists/comedians are not very good at paneling or comedying. Since trump won, morning edition has been yet another platform for right wing talking heads to spew bullshit unchallenged. I mean if they have a panel it'll be like one neocon and one Nazi, with the host softballing them

In one episode of WWDTM Peter Sagal was asked by an audience member if, growing up, he was the class clown or the class "brain." PS's response was that he was the class "crane", and the whole live audience laughed. They all laughed.

Before there was Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me there was "Whad'ya Know?" which was the same show except somehow even worse. Instead of a panel of hosts they just had one really unfunny middle aged white guy from Wisconsin and even the audience didn't laugh at his jokes half the time. Radio Lab is the worst show for having interesting sounding content made unlistenable by the presentation If local public radio shows count, the station where I grew up used to have a local "news" show which consisted only of leaving the mic on at charity dinners where the mic picked up people clinking their plates/glasses better than the people giving dull speeches. It was cancelled when the host (who just came on in the first 30 seconds to announce the program named after him) died of heart disease Item Getter fucked around with this message at 07:46 on Jun 2, 2017 |

NPR was amazing for most of my life and now I switch to it, 1/10th of the time there is an amazing classical piece playing, 9/10ths of the time there's a woman giving a speech on her race in the victim olympics and I yell at the radio and mash the button They're about three Trump segments a day from competing with Stephen Colbert on "the same joke every single five minutes that anyone could write" Reminds me of when Hitchens explained that George Bush jokes became a way to actually empower George Bush, if someone tells you the same half assed joke every five minutes you'll eventually agree the president is an idiot and in a way absolve him of the crimes he should be punished for as an adult, or you might even like the loving rear end in a top hat just from reflecting on how unfunny and overpaid his TV opponents are

It's either the quiz show where the guests have a multiple choice test on really obscure words or the one where the host is always interviewing authors of books no one will ever read. Those or Diane Rheem.

Plenty of room over on WNPR if you wanna hear about the disastrous state of Connecticut's budget.

Yeah the worst part of Radio Lab or TED Radio Hour is the way so many terrible podcasts and shows mimic their precocious format. Where a 2-5 minute segment of an expert talking or someone telling a story gets stretched into 15-30 by lovely reporters and the host having time outs to gush enthusiastically and (hopefully) pretend they need the topic dumbed down for them, so explain it in a really shity metaphor and oversimplification and then gush for a few minutes about how cool that is. Local shows: I'll throw in "Take Two" from KPCC. It's like the NPR equivalent of "The wacky fluff newsshow for dummies" local stations like Fox put on from 8-10 after the real morning news ends. 0 depth, 0 analysis and lovely gushing about dumb pet hobbies and interests of some of the in house reporters/plugs for their various podcasts and blogs. The best part though is why it's called "Take two" Short version: It's a dig at the station's former rising star reporter who was given a show in that slot then quit the station. Long version: She was given a show and free reign to report on whatever she wanted, it had decent reporting and some depth, but was all WASPy mom poo poo no one else cared about. So to try and boost ratings they demanded she give equal billing to some ESPN washout to talk about stuff only a WASPy dad would care about. She protested because he was a poo poo journalist and left the station. The show is now "Take Two," since it's the second attempt at the format/show. The host is such a bad journalist and dumb-dumb they went from a two hour show airing twice a day to an hour aired once, because they have trouble padding it even with other reporters from the network coming on to preview what'll be on their shows that day. The station can't fire him/cancel the show though because it would be admitting they hosed up.

I don't know if it counts as radio, but Invisibilia is shockingly bad. The hosts talk in slow, condescending voices as if they're speaking to children, and the content is so shallow and simplistic that is frequently misleading.

Bullseye with Jesse Thorn Half the show is just promoting his podcast network and all interstitials are people he's had call in to tell him how great he is. He makes every interview about him and his own personal experiences. So sycophantic.

About two years ago I was listening to the local member station and they were promoting a local young author. Her book was about how her grandfather was a nazi and she is a jew, so if she had met her grandfather he surely would have killed her. Thats when I stopped listening to radio and now drive to and from work in silence.

The thing is, he didn't have to interview people, which is what he is so terrible at, that it makes his show the worst.

You know what's real good, though, is The Big Broadcast where they play like 4 hours of old radio stuff from the 30s, 40s, and 50s (Johnny Dollar, Dragnet, Abbot and Costello, Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger, Jack Benny, Bob Hope). http://wamu.org/show/the-big-broadcast/ Used to be hosted by Ed Walker for over 20 years. He died three hours after his farewell show was broadcast. That's synchronization.
