I've never had an understanding of how carburetors work. I knew they did something to serve up fuel. The guy on SmarterEveryDay put together a clear carb and has some great footage on how it works, in the event you find these things interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toVfvRhWbj8

Speaking of car sales... What are people's thoughts on this craziness? Will the bubble pop and someone's left holding the bag of poo poo, or will it just cool a little and these crazy prices become the norm? *Also, I'm seeing a lot of articles saying the average new car price at the start of the year was $40k. I'm trying to plan a trip from LA to PDX with the caveat I'll be supercharging along the way. Not sure if I'm just getting old, but stopping multiple places for tourist reasons just does not appeal to me. At the same time, neither does driving 18hr straight with stops to charge. Finding a balance of seeing a few places and a place to stay is way more work than I expected.

Otherwise, these sorts of demand-induced price shocks tend to work themselves out in six months to a year. Lots of commodities spiked in price as demand outstripped supply at the start of the recovery. Most are coming back down, and used car prices will come down as new cars become more available.

Deteriorata posted:For cars, the shortage of chips may be an issue for a while. Otherwise, these sorts of demand-induced price shocks tend to work themselves out in six months to a year. Yeah, I think you're probably going to see new car prices increase, but once new cars become available you'll get gapping again between new and used car prices. Right now that doesn't seem to exist and that makes sense if you just can't get a new car but why would anyone buy a used car for the same or more than a new car if new is available? Anyway, as we get new cars I expect used car prices will become lower than new car prices. But I don't know how much new car prices will rise. And if they do rise a lot then I could see at least some of the price inflation sticking around. But I expect no matter what there will be a group of people who've overspent on cars now and aren't able to recoup that (in addition to your usual depreciation). Anyway, from what I've been seeing there's a lot of significantly overpriced vans and trucks that are now getting price drops of a couple thousand so they're still overpriced but like 3k above what I think they should be vs. 5-6k. Purely by way of example, https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/196318665623672 this just dropped $2500 this afternoon. I think it's still a little too much for being 4cylinder (and I just looked it up and KBB agrees with me) but there's a big difference between asking a couple grand over and maybe negotiating down to bluebook vs. asking and actually getting 5k over bluebook. Anyway, this really is all anecdotal and limited to tacomas and large vans in the greater NYC area so who knows what's really happening in the market but I thought it was interesting given what I'd been reading and seeing previously. e: I should add that I expect a lot of the van prices absolutely skyrocketing were because of a combination of delivery vehicle demand and #vanlife demand and with folks doing a lot more in person, fleets generally being filled out, others going back to work and the remainder realizing that living in a van full time sucks compared to instagram I expect those to fall even more and wouldn't be surprised if there was a bit of a glut in that particular market in the next year. the spyder posted:I'm trying to plan a trip from LA to PDX with the caveat I'll be supercharging along the way. I'm just grumpy with unnecessary range anxiety. So far the plan is this: Thursday: Leave LA ~1PM, head towards 101 Charge 1: Pismo Beach Destination 1: Hearst Castle Charge 2: Pacific Grove Destination 2: Spend the night in Pacific Grove - Hotel on bay. Stop by Laguna Seca And that's as far as I've got. I could wake up, hop on 5 and just head home. About a ~12 hour drive from Pacific Grove. I've got 3 days to do the drive, so there's no reason to rush.

Northern hwy 1 through California is worth any detour and particularly you should go through the avenue of giants after 1 merges with 101. 101 is quicker but you will not regret taking the long way through the trees. I did a bunch of the touristy stuff on that route and chronicled it in my thread if you want to see what my experience was. Just keep flipping back till you see a large photo dump. With three days you should have some flexibly as to charge locations and charging rates, some slow charging at a dinner location or scenic stop might be enough to keep you going. I know a few of the hotels I stopped at along the coast had fast chargers in their parking areas too, and these seemed like small towns to me. Now there's likely more available.

I’m concerned that in three to five years there’s going to be a lot more buyers with outrageous amounts of negative equity because they paid 10-20k over MSRP for a 2021 model or paid the original MSRP on a 2017 vehicle. My team has been sitting around twiddling their thumbs for the last week because there is very little internet traffic from prospective customers. The prior six weeks were filled with a lot of upset customers who can’t get the car they want at a price they want, and we have been dealing with a used car shortage for a while. At the start of this week my dealership had nine new cars and about 30 used cars on the lot, when in previous years we have had 200+ of each. All of our incoming vans, midsize SUVs, and hybrid SUVs have deposits on them and we won’t see another truck for quite a while. We have ten times the amount of factory orders that we normally do. I feel for the salespeople at dealerships where they are paid on a per-unit basis rather than gross because it’s hard to make money when there are no cars to sell. The pandemic has not left any markets untouched. I am trying to find a horse but all of the nice reasonably priced ones got bought up last year when people suddenly found themselves with a lot of time on their hands.

I remember as a little kid going to PCB for summer breaks with my family they used to tell me that houses were small like shacks because of storms and stuff like that. They also build houses on "stilts" closer to the shore. Anyways I figured that was a cope because the people owning property in PCB just didn't have the same kind of money as Miami or larger metro areas but honestly I think they may have been right? Idk as poo poo starts to get hotter I intend to retreat into the wilderness of central Canada.
