I joined my first discussion forum by following a link from an ad in PC gamer, jumped to other communities as they were discussed / namedropped and eventually wound up on SA.

It took me a long time to buy an account because where do you get a credit card to make random-rear end online purchases at 13?
What I eventually did was convince my mom to let me borrow her credit card to buy a present for a school friend (which meant much less parental scrutiny than purchases for myself) then convinced my friend to do the same on my birthday.

I certainly hope you don't hook up with Henry Moore. He's actually too big for some women to handle, though most are incredibly satisfied.
It used to be popular.

I would use my older sisters account at our family computer. She got sick of it so she bought me an account.

I got banned a few weeks later for posting in a honeypot thread and logged in to see a photo of a man’s ejaculating penis with a tarantula on it.

I do not wear this mask to protect me. I wear it to protect you from me.

A coworker of mine was here for the porn n torrents and told me that the regular forum was pretty funner. I lurked for awhile and finally joined to post in a Photoshop thread.

Somewhere deep in the registry my friends account may still exist but he long ago forgot his login information.

For a long time, from 1992 to 2010, IRC was the only real way I interacted with the the internet, whereas I would just passively lurk the forums and occasionally get sent .mht files via xdcc when something I was reading disappeared behind the paywall.

Eventually I manned up enough to register, then lurked for a fair while before actually posting anything.

I had to learn English somehow and there were very few sites with regular articles related to subjects kid me knew about. I found the frontpage in 99 and it talked about games, it was in English, that was good enough for me to try to learn the language because Lord knows school was useless.

I am not exactly sure. It's either after the CSI episode on furries, that i was searching for some 'haha furries are disgusting amirite' edgelord bullshit i thought was funny when i was 15. Definitely had a few laughs at the home page comedy stuff. I kinda wanna go back and read some of the furry forum stuff they dug up, but i also know for sure that it hasn't aged well at all.

Joke's on me, almost 15 years later a considerable part of my friend group is a furry and i am amazed at the whole artsy subculture they built.

Another possibility is looking for gay porn but not actually daring to go to real porn sites. I was always told that porn sites contain viruses and i didn't wanna gently caress over my computer. So instead i think i just got on google images, and then found the PYF dick thread that way.

I didn't register until fairly recently, because in my country, credit cards are uncommon, and paying money to a internet forum with a credit card was totally unheard of. 2ish years ago i finally got a credit card because it didn't cost me much, so i took the plunge and weirded myself out with the fact that you can pay for stuff with just the numbers on the card - without any other factor of authentication, PIN code or whatever.

Pretty sure I wandered over here from the Interplay forums where talking about the NEW FALLOUT was being worked on, circa 2003~. In couldn't tell you what was linked or why, but I do remember Rope Kid telling me, nicely, that I was a dumbass for thinking Fallout:Tactics was cannon vs Fallout or Fallout 2.

What made me register was the "those are my shoes you are a dog they don't even fit" Photoshop Phriday because goddamn that owned.

Lurking the TTLG forums (which were for discussing looking glass productions games like thief and system shock) someone posted a link to a Photoshop Friday front page article where people wrote alternate titles for choose your own adventure books. The article had a link to the forums and that was that.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

A friend in high school had been a member of the site since the early 2000s and told me about it. I probably checked it out around 2004 then forgot about it since I had just graduated high school and I didn't have a computer or the internet when I moved out on my own. It wasn't until 2006 when I was wounded in Iraq and found myself with a lot of time on my hands that I finally checked put this place. The rest is history.

Best :10bux: I ever spent. I think the best way I've seen the forums described was a post in the last year by someone that said "The Something Awful forums are one of the few places I feel a real sense of community and belonging but no one would know or care if I died."

I sometimes wonder this, as two of my friends and I signed up within 24 hours of each other after months of frequent lurking and discussions with our one friend who already had an account, so something absolutely fantastic must have gone down in mid-April 2003 that we all knew we had to be part of forever

I also wanted to be part of the Fark/Something Awful Photoshop war, but I do not remember if that was before or after. I do remember being like 90% sure I made an account to contribute to one of those early "everyone takes a Photoshopped image and adds one ZaNy ThInG" projects but my account was then deleted for inactivity after a year which I swear was a thing that used to happen. Hard to imagine the era I did not log in multiple times a day. What the hell else was I even doing in like 2002? My IRC days were already long over
