Randomly IKing thread posters in CSPAM on a rotating basis so that new IKs are chosen every ~24 hours would be a stupid idea and also a funny thing to do for April Fools' or just by surprise for no reason. Maybe limit candidates to a minimum post count scaled to the number of posts the thread has, weighted by how recently they've regularly posted in the thread to avoid handing IK powers to some drive-by weirdo or inactive poster because that would be slightly less funny. Or not because that sounds like the sort of thing I'd design while avoiding work but I assume astral has plenty to do already.

Also I'm tired of hearing about larry. He wasn't that funny or upsetting and I have no idea why you people care so hard.

my favourite April Fool's idea is that every poster is an IK for 24 hours, but making the mod list at the top of CSPAM 900 names long might actually break the forums

That would also be funny af. Less so the breaking the forums part. Also I imagine qqcs crew would immediately run in and start mashing buttons in an unfunny way because it's very important to own one's posting enemies apparently.

There are no near-term plans for a moderation API, if that's what you're asking. We're still in the "stop everything from being on so, so much fire" stage, though smaller bugfixes and improvements of course still happen.

This is cool.

I'm curious what makes moderation on mobile difficult. I just use the normal web interface to browse on my phone and it's fine. I have a recent phone, but not one of those gigantic phablets or anything. Is the mod interface just really weird and complex? I mean I'm not complaining if I manage to miss a probe for posting dumb nonsense again, but it seems like an odd problem.

My understanding is that people like to use the third-party mobile apps to browse SA, but those don't really have moderation features implemented. The forums themselves aren't very well-designed for mobile (one thing among many that we plan to improve in time) and the moderator tools are no exception. There's a very tiny button on each post that pops up a similarly tiny menu; it works well on a desktop with a mouse, but I can't imagine that's at all pleasant on a phone.

Huh, I used to use the app before I bought a modern smartphone, but I have no problem with the full website on mobile now, just occasionally have to turn it to landscape and zoom. Maybe I'm an outlier, but I can't stand the way mobile devs usually seem to strip away half the site's functionality to make it work with ancient low resolution devices. That said I'm sure plenty of users would appreciate a slick mobile site, and no one asked me anyway. Guess if we go full on Mobile Experience I can always request the desktop site.

Anyway thanks for sharing all this stuff here. I appreciate that there's some engagement with users even if most of our ideas and suggestions are wild nonsense and totally not viable.

This is accurate. To explain a bit further, basically all the moderation buttons for a specific thread are in a big row at the very top. Choosing a specific one on mobile requires zooming in and out and sometimes that messes with the rendering at least on my phone (happens in both Firefox and Chrome, fwiw).

Stuff for a specific user is all linked to a small button on each of their posts, which you gotta click on then choose from a list of things that are used for both good (give plat, give custom title, and title blank) and bad (probation and ban). It's real easy to hit one or the other and not notice because the text is pretty small.

As an example of why I try not to mod on mobile, I once tried to give someone a ban+30 but ended up giving them a 6er instead. Now, you may be asking how I could be that stupid, and the answer is a little complicated. First, understand that to prevent accidents, bans and probes are applied separately. So I first went in and applied a 30 day probation. Because this is a serious punishment, it is reviewed by an admin before it is applied, just like a ban is. So I did that correctly, but then when I went to do the ban, I accidentally clicked on Probation again. The screens look real similar and unlike a probation where you have to choose a length (unless you want a default 6er), bans are regular ban by default so I wasn't expecting to change anything. I missed on my phone that there was a drop-down instead of a radial button, and applied a 6er instead, which either overrode the 30 day probe or the admin who looked at it declined because I did a later probe (I'm unclear on that, but it's not really relevant). vyelkin caught the issue quick fortunately so it wasn't a problem, but after that, I stopped doing any modding on my phone.

So yeah, it's possible to moderate on a phone, at least for some folks, but it is a gigantic pain in the rear end and prone to misclicks so a lot of folks don't do it or don't do it unless they absolutely must.

And when Az and astral say they're small buttons, they aren't kidding. This is what happens if I want to give Az a sixer for fun:

First, I have to click the tiny little square button on the far left:

Then it opens this equally small menu:

If I click "probation" it takes me to this menu:

where I have to choose the length of probe from a dropdown box (it defaults to a sixer if you don't pick anything), write in the reason that will appear in the Leper's Colony and the user's rap sheet, and add any mod-only notes if there's a need for any.

If I want to ban Az instead, I get this menu:

It's basically the exact same form but you just pick between ban and permaban (it defaults to a regular ban if you do nothing) and write in the reasons same as with the probation.

I've never tried to do it on mobile because I always just browse from my laptop, but I can really see how the tiny buttons and virtually identical screens lead to mistakes now and then.

And astral could tell you this far better than I could, but this is a very low priority for fixing because it generally works the way it should and it's a feature that a very small proportion of the users of the site ever interact with.

OK, that’s far more of a hassle than just clicking around and shitposting where the worst pain point is manually entering bbcode. I can see why no sane person would mod on their phone. Thanks for the explanation.
