So my birthday present this year was a meeting with seals at the Rostock Marine Science Center, which we did earlier this week. It was really great, they explained to us what they're doing, how they're researching the seals and, of course, let us meet the seals and take pictures of them: This seal is currently in the process of being convinced to go back into the water.   The seals are all trained with copious amounts of fish to perform various tricks, which is very useful if they need to see a doctor.  Except for the oldest ones, they're all born in captivity and not afraid of humans.  As evidenced by the photobombing seal in the background. He (they only have males at the station) kept popping up when other seals were called in, hoping that maybe he could get some fish too.  The seals are also trained to work with the staff in various experiments. For this one, they test how sensitive a seal's eyelashed are. The seal is equipped with a mask and headphones so he can't see or hear anything, then puts his head underwater and a current of water is moved either to his left or to his right. He then pushes either the left or the right button. If he gets it right, here's a fish.
