Waltzing Along posted:It's in theaters right now and has been for the last 3 weeks or so. Outside of metropolis-tier cities it was mostly one-off screenings. My city's was that way, and as such was flagged as an "event" screening, so instead of movie trailers we got trailers for live broadcasts of plays and operas and some 3d documentary about Raphael (not the ninja turtle). It was like the theater was saying "nooo anime isn't art this is art it's not too late to leave".

That's why I put in the OP just say whatever you want about the movie. It's also why I put it in GBS. It's more interesting to see the chaos any opinion will stir up. Pick, for example, is intimately familiar with the film and anime in general. Clearly, she is an expert on anime. But she thinks the movie is trash. So an anime fan is telling you the movie is bad. I, as a non anime fan, say it is quite good. Who to believe? Pick, the anime expert or me, the person who just likes good movies? Or you could trust rottentomatoes. The aggregate for the movie is 98% which is, I believe, the highest rated anime on the site.

Saw it in a theater- definitely overhyped but I still enjoyed myself. It was cute. Audience was surprisingly diverse; saw people up to their 30s-40s, a bunch of highschoolers, and the obligatory Trenchcoat Neckbeard Fedora Guy even apparently deigned to watch this mainstream pleb anime

No you should watch Kamen Rider Amazons, which is live action so it's not even anime and it's not for kids because the rubber suit monsters eat people on screen, and season 2 so far is a lot more gory than season 1 was and has on-screen EATING EYEBALLS AND BRAINS AND GUTS ARE STREWN EVERYWHERE

Miyazaki himself has come out to say that Spirited Away is not about a bordello and that my neighbor Totoro is not about a murder. People seem to have the stupid Grim dark interpretations of every loving piece of animated media. It is not blood and guts and murder and rape that will make your stupid loving cartoons something that adults can enjoy. It is actual quality that makes cartoon something adults can enjoy, where we live in a world that, frankly, most cartoons loving suck rear end. Some of them are good, and they're worth cherishing, and cherishing means not saying theyre about child rape

Spirited Away is about taking care of the environment. However, much of the movie takes place at a bordello where the young women are being taught how to take care of the men. It's not about the sex trade. That's just the setting. It's like how Cheers wasn't about a bar, it just took place in one.
