Last book-related recommendation- if you live in the usa, get the Libby library app. You can literally get a library card through the app and then use it to get all the books and audiobooks you could ever want for free. I have a close friend who's a teacher, and she and all her students have it.

Anyway,

I use StoryGraph, which was started as an alternative to Goodreads so you didn't have to use Amazon services. It even imports your goodreads data

Gankutsuo is the best Monte Cristo adaptation, and it's not even a close contest at all.

I like the selection on Hoopla better but Libby is also sick. Hoopla has a massive selection of comics.

Does not help that there's not a lot of real competition.

I think it doesn't help that Monte Cristo is too long and too complicated to really pull off as a movie, and would thus be consigned to the no-man's-land of TV miniseries which really wouldn't have the budget to pull it off. Though nowadays it might work in a prestige TV format.

That said, I can't think of many other books that would successfully make the period where the protagonist is locked in a dungeon alone for years one of the most interesting parts. Come to think of it, the descriptions are probably some of the best parts; going from detailed descriptions of a damp miserable dungeon to lavish homes of the rich and famous.

I beat got the true ending for this game yesterday which was kinda anti-climactic but I suppose that’s not the point of the game. Please do yourself a favor and don’t do what I did. If you run into a really hard puzzle, come back to it after you beat the game for the first time because there’s an item that makes a lot of the ridiculous poo poo a lot easier

I’m not honestly even sure if I’m done with the game because there are still things I don’t really understand like what’s up with the “secret bunnies” and the music note cipher I found in that room with the huge pile of skulls

It’s a very good game and I hope the devs (dev?) continue to add content.

The narrative layers were like an interesting onion and realizing the whole thing was actually a riff on St. Elsewhere was pretty fun but even as a teen I got the impression that the writer was kind of up his own rear end.

Runa

Later I started reading Umineko and thinking, this reminds me of House of Leaves but a lot worse written. But also a lot more interesting to read for some reason? And that comparison is probably completely nonsense but at the time I was pretty young so in retrospect that was a Boss Baby moment.

I read and still own my copy of the Fifty-Year Sword, which is a really cool-looking book but has about a short story's worth of content, and not a particularly good short story

I got a little bit into House of Leaves, dropped it because it wasn't quite clicking, and then it was one of the handful of books we lost to the sprinklers when our apartment building caught fire. I should probably take another swing at it, but I might have to get it from the library or something because I dunno if I want to buy another copy before I know whether I actually like it

Speaking of gimmicks I bought Alan Moore 's first novel voice of the fire and the first part is written in neanderthal limited vocab that I couldn't penetrate at all and I never touched it since. I dunno if I'll ever pick it up again but some time later I saw him doing that kind of conlang stuff for of all things, spin offs of the crossed comic series and that was also a chore to parse
