Main Paineframe posted:The US does not have any rules and procedures for resolving a disputed election beyond recounts and "welp, let's see which candidate the Supreme Court likes more". There is zero precedent for "welp, the election's invalid, let's have a do-over", ever. At best, the results for the entire disputed voting machine might get tossed. Hell, prior to Bush v. Gore, the Supreme Court typically held that the federal government did not have the power to interfere with election results even in cases of obvious fraud, and it's likely that an 8-member court is going to punt similarly. Election fraud is a big deal even if it's discovered, because our system is not robust enough to handle it. Except for things like the voting rights act?

***anecdote and not evidence*** but this just went up on a friend's facebook wall, a girl I went to college with. quote:Sexism hurts all of us: female voters are falling in love with Clinton in spite of our politics and our contempt for the Clinton machine because of the sheer nastiness directed at America's first serious female Presidential candidate. I was not prepared to cast my vote on the basis of gender--I campaigned for Sanders and was convinced I'd end up voting Stein, as I did in '12. That was when I assumed that blatant sexism would come only from an archaic fringe. Every time an otherwise sane, progressive human being says something like, "Clinton did pretty well in the debate. I think she's actually got a shot," I realize that if we don't elect a woman while she is the most politically experienced candidates in recent history... running against a comically unqualified man whose linguistic structure displays all the hallmarks of a personality disorder and/or neurologically-motivated cognitive decline... it may not ever happen. Because even under these ludicrously favorable circumstances, Americans are *surprised* by the possibility that after electing men from minority religious groups, minority ethnic groups, and objectively under-qualified and/or scandalous backgrounds... A wealthy, white woman with a mainstream platform *might* just beat the most polarizing candidate anyone can remember. Who started his primary campaign to boost his position in reality TV salary negotiations, with no intention of continuing to the general. Whose comments of public record would torpedo the career of any female *actor,* much less politician. Who has repeatedly expressed his intention to violate America's international agreements and destroy our geopolitical standing.

Trabisnikof posted:Who knows, but this is part of the legal code criminalizing what the NYTs did: Okay, but does that part of the tax code give Trump a private right of action? If it doesn't, who cares? (I know that law degree would come in handy someday!) edit to add: I'm really not sure what grounds Trump would have to sue, even if leaking his tax info was illegal under criminal statute. It certainly as hell isn't libel though, I know that much. Truth is a complete defense to libel. The Rokstar fucked around with this message at 23:47 on Oct 2, 2016 |

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/03/business/how-donald-trump-turned-the-tax-code-into-a-giant-tax-shelter.html The Times posted another good article about the tax stuff. There's nothing new, but it's a good read about just how many questions the leak raises about what's actually going on with Trump's finances. quote:“If it wasn’t clear before, it is now: The tax code is tilted toward the rich in its statutory framework, its exceptions, and in how it is enforced and administered,” said Steven M. Rosenthal, a real estate tax specialist and senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.

Mr Interweb posted:Giuliani kept babbling about how Trump had to take those tax deductions because if he didn't, then his investors would be able to sue him. Think of the scandal this way: The one feather in his cap that Trump is running on is that he is supposedly a real smart, and adept business guru. Of course anyone who knows anything of Trump's business acumen outside of The Apprentice already knew this is utterly untrue. So this tax return thing isn't really a smoking gun, we already had that. It's more a receipt to a gun purchase, proving that the smoking gun is indeed Trump's. Why this is a new controversy is that it's a Catch 22 for Trump. Admit that the tax break is legitimate and that the smartest business man in the world somehow managed to lose almost a billion dollars in one year, and somehow he doesn't look so great at this whole business thing. Or he could admit to dodging taxes and some other illegal activity which will land him in jail in addition to costing him the election.
