He even admits that the main reason he plays that stupid-rear end 10-string bass is because he gets "lazy and complacent" when playing 4-string basses.

The old adage "a bad workman always blames his tools" is incredibly apt. If you find yourself playing boring music on a normal 4-string or 5-string bass, well then you're just a lovely musician.

That would be a good dumb way to mess with people.

Wes Borland used to use 7's tuned to C# standard but the top 2 strings were both the same C#. Brian Molko from Placebo used to do similar on his 6s, and Max Cavalera's signature guitars used to come with only the bottom 4 on them

"I wanted an instrument that could challenge me"

Then either change to another instrument or learn how to play four strings properly.
This guy and people like him are even worse than the microtonal guys. They're all like "ooh I need to be challenged musically" and when you hear them play you realize that they are truly musically challenged, with just a basic knowledge of music theory and technique.

The only >6 string bass player I haven't hated instinctively is that grey mustache dude a few pages back. You can't not love him.

The story goes that Max somehow broke the two thinnest strings on a Sepultura tour many years ago and just never replaced them because he never used them anyway. In album liner notes (at least in Soulfly) he is specifically credited with playing "four string guitar"

A really lovely one.

This is a really great source of bass face videos by the way.

Ugh, agreed. I followed him because I thought his "what is Djent" video was kinda funny, then I saw a few more and realized he was basically the kind of guy he was making fun of himself. And he always makes those lovely faces and annoying voices. Worst thing is, it's hard to look away from the trainwreck.

Like some other youtube guitar celebs like Rob Scallon and Jared Dines he eventually got some endorsement deals, and watching them try to shoehorn these products into their videos is REALLY grating at times.

I mentioned the terrible plugs of Positive Grid's BIAS before, but this time I'm linking them.

My FOVORITE ten effects! Sure, an experienced guitarist would range his favorite specific pedals, but I'm ranging favorite effect types like chorus, delay and distortion. Also I'm using BIAS BY POSITIVE GRID's versions of all the effects. Watch me having to manipulate the Wahwah with my finger on the touchscreen while playing because these digital effects don't have foot controls! BLARG! *frown* WOOOP! *sticks tongue out* D-JENT D-JDENT D-DJEN *dies in corner*

Jared Dines is less annoying, but still:

Can you believe that all these sounds come from digital effects? By the way, they're all included in BIAS BY POSITIVE GRID

He is annoying in the same way 99% of youtube celebrities are (people trying WAY too hard) with an extra dash of having a face that itches to be punched.

I totally missed that video at first, drat. Yeah, this is why you have this many strings, not so you can doodle up and down the two-plus octave fretboard in a three-fret span like a dude with a skyscraper bass.

I was idly fast-forwarding through that video to see what "selections" he made, and when I got to the point of him freaking out like an ostrich with an orange in its windpipe yelling about how "if you can't play these last few, YOU SUCK" I just rolled my eyes and turned it off.

This would be good if they didn't have the biggest possible goober play awful rock riffs on an acoustic to demo it.

I wonder if such tech could be used like an expression pedal, that'd be really cool for modulation rate or filter/wah freq: when its not touched its "off" then bend down filters out highs and bend up becomes a resonant high pass or vowel filter.

As stupid as having a kaos pad Ibanez but a bit more guitar like to play

They say "any guitar" but it's unclear if you could switch the bar to the other side for left-handed use.

Not that I want one. But I agree it could be useful if it could be used as a controller for something other than pitch bends.
