The mist that chills you keeps me warm.

So I backed Hyper Light Drifter, which was a nice game for the $10 I paid, even though it came out nearly two years after the expected June 2014 delivery date. But this one here:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1192311215/ghost-song-a-journey-of-hope/description

I've always been a fan of the Metroid/Castlevania (Metroidvania?) style games, and this guy is not only two years past the expected delivery date, but he hasn't given us an update since February. He doesn't even have some life-threatening condition like the Hyper Light Drifter guy. It's too bad, too. He released a demo on Steam for backers and it played well.

Have you ever played a video game, used a microwave, or run a data regression? All of these and more depend on computers, but up till now computers were limited to operating systems. Systems with problems.

What if we developed the operating system, a system without problems? A system as good for toasting delicious bread in your networked sandwich press as it is for pattern-detection in economic trends? A system that works with every security protocol ever written and never needs updating?

That's why I decided to develop an OS that is rock solid, completely secure, and easily adapts to any work environment as well as scaling from embedded contexts to super-cluster processing.

I've worked in IT for many months so I understand how challenging this project will be! That's why I've set our kickstarter goal at $10,000. But, if we meet our stretch goal of $30,000 we will add compatibility with every known chip architecture or Babbage Enginge.

Using the wisdom of crowds to source ideas and the power of direct financing to bypass stultifying corporate conformity, we'll develop The System. Together. Fast. With an expected delivery date of next September for backers followed by a general release in 2018, The System is bringing the future faster, cheaper, and better.

I think my favorite thing about it is just how little the bottles actually hold.

They're advertising it as a thing to carry two drinks, so you get, like, a standard can of each drink, and a compartment in the middle for a handful of granola or something. Almost every picture they have of people using it are pictures of suburban moms and businessmen, so I don't think it's supposed to be intended for activities that would typically require a water bottle. There's also a picture on there of the bottle in a standard bike bottle holder, and it doesn't sit right in it, so look out of the Golchi-specific bike bottle holder!

e: I mean, I can get 2 24oz insulated water bottles off of Amazon for about the same price as they're asking on here, and they'll still fit it my bike's bottle thing.

It's a (Hero) Trap!

Backers' Only Update posted:

Some contributors to our Kickstarter campaign for The Hero Trap have expressed disappointment that we have not delivered the game. I share your disappointment, and want to give you some information about our work status on the project.

When we ran the Kickstarter campaign, we made a strategic decision to create a lower goal amount than we needed to complete the project, in the hopes that we would exceed the goal amount but still receive the money generated by the campaign should it fall short of our expectations. When we did not raise the amount anticipated, we hoped that we would be able to make up the difference by securing the balance of the amount needed through a publisher. That didn’t happen, leading to more budgetary shortfalls. Simultaneously, we lost our anchor client in the more lucrative work for hire part of our business.

With a smaller team, we continued to work on The Hero Trap consistently. We realized there were some flaws in the gameplay and attempted to correct course, which led to us to changing much of the hook that attracted many players in the first place. Nonetheless, we felt with this new version of the game we would be able to find a publisher. Unfortunately, this was not to be. At this point, I’ve personally spent over eighty thousand dollars and I can’t afford to keep pumping money into it. In addition to the financial strain, it’s taken a personal toll. At this time, I’m regretfully cancelling the project.

I will make every effort to refund the money of those who feel they have been “cheated” as a few contributors described. While it was obviously not our intention to cheat any contributors, I take responsibility for making some mistakes in the fundraising phase. Please send me your paypal account via private message by July 10. I will return your money shortly after that.

For those of you who remain, we will be posting the current Mac and Windows versions of the game after the refunds. Additionally, each donor will receive a copy of my next game, whatever that may be.

I’m truly sorry if you are disappointed, but financing games is a complicated business and not every project makes it to completion. Thank you for supporting us, and for supporting small projects like ours in the future. Nik

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1055933980/the-hero-trap/description

Funding amount was set at $25K with stretch goals up to $100K and more teased beyond that. Funded with $26,082. How dare backers feel "cheated" when the dev intentionally undercut the budget, right?!

SpacePig
Apr 4, 2007

Hold that pose.
I've gotta get something.
They also seem to have under-valued the game itself somewhat, as copies were being sold for as little as $5 for the early birds, and you could get 2 copies for $20. I know you want to give KS backers a little bit of a price break, but when you're already selling your game for dirt cheap, maybe don't be surprised when people don't understand that "financing games is a complicated business". You purposefully undercut yourself twice over.
