Wasabi the J posted:Gonna side with MK4 on this. Track cars shouldn't be the benchmark for what items are supposed to be worthy of regular use. All heavily tracked wheels will probably crack at some point. Heat+stress=failure. "Good" track wheels should ideally fail gracefully. If the are designed properly, one crack, even of a structural member should allow the wheel to stay together. For example: SSR RIP. You were too light for this world. These wheels were like 6-7 years old and had been on a time attack car before I got them. Lots and lots of track miles. Based on the sounds I heard, that I thought was a rock in the brake pad (actually, it was that too, see the rotor), this was going on for a bit. But it didn't fail at speed and gave me time to try to figure out why my steering feel was weird and making weird noises. The complaint re: Rota is that supposedly they fail catastrophically. That is way more dangerous if true.

Rotas suck mostly because they steal designs. Someone worked hard to come up with those designs. Many cheap wheels are fine for road use, but if you like a certain aesthetic design you should buy the real thing or not buy it at all. You're taking some designer's / engineer's hard work and making GBS threads on it. If it's a replica of a factory wheel / something out of production it's not particularly egregious, but reps of aftermarket wheels that are still available are lovely practice that should not be rewarded with your business.

There were a bunch of people on facebook upset about some random new wheel company recently, because some guy bought a set and then had one break the first day out at the track. I wanted to ask what he expected but try to stay out of poo poo like that.

If I drove a car through lovely winters and the brakes were too big for steelies, I'd do the most ridiculous Rotas.

But Volk don't make the insane concave ones like Rota do.

Less breaking wheel chat, more awesome poo poo. Since I'm on a 4 rotor binge... The prototype for that car was at the Hampton Downs race meeting I went to. It's being restored here. It was in well-used condition. From memory it was a March chassis with a rotary jammed in the back of it.

I'm not up on my classic race car history, but it was definitely in another league. Unfortunately the mazda 767b broke down somewhere between the formation lap and lap 1 so I never got to hear it go past at full chat.

I know basically nothing about MGs other than my friend had an oooooold roadster that was continuously broken This was just a very unusual car to see here. I've seen several EU spec, previous generation 3-door Focus RSs and Alfas, but never one of these. I guess I should have said that they get all of the quirky/weird cars.

Those cars are utter shitheaps. If they're not blowing head gaskets they're rotting away at subframe mounting points. Everything about them is awful and the sooner the last one rots to the ground, the better.

I'm rather fond of my MGF - it's reliable, comfortable, quite nippy, and a blast to drive. Haters going to hate I suppose, but there's a good following, parts backup and they're cheap as chips to run. My head gasket is fine, my subframes aren't crumbling away at the mounting points, and most importantly, it's not a bloody MX-5!

Content: I've seen a fair few of these around now, but never had a chance to snap a picture. Saw this one driving past when I went to get my haircut and found it parked up nearby afterwards. Only thing I dont like it is the skinny little wiener tyres, a car like this should always have massive wide tyres damnit.
