Holy poo poo, new Istapp!

Full stream here, album release August 7th!

I never know how to classify these guys, I guess it's swedish melodic guitar-centric slightly punky blackish metal that's super catchy and awesome and kind of unique in sound and tone with occasional clean vocals that rule?

This is some good poo poo, right here. Anyone have some more recommendations for melodic black metal? I used to listen to a lot of Dissection, Naglfar, Windir and the like.

As a side-note, Istapp is pretty much a joke/parody band. "Istapp" means "icicle", and they used to label their albums as "anti-sun". As far as parodies go, however, they're not completely terrible.

Haha. Honestly, having every track refer to snow and ice didn't even strike me as weird. It's real hard telling whether black metal is being unironic or not unless they're like, Sportlov

You might like:

Vreid ( former Windir members, minus the dude that died, maybe more rock n' roll? ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7E-Tocny7o

Galar (melodic black metal with acoustic interludes, clean vocals male/female, chanting, violins in parts) - https://soundcloud.com/galarofficial/tusen-kall-til-solsang-ny

Thulcandra ( straight-up Dissection clone ) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm5pRkmsybw

Blut Aus Nord ( this album is one of the best of 2014/2015) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FKjDJDZQ3w

Cnoc an Tursa ( similar Dissection riff base, but with scottish folk ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0LTLodpAQY

Yeah don't bother reading any of their interviews because they are terribly ham-fisted in being "ironic", but the music speaks for itself I think.

"The debut, Blekinge, was released 2010 and now album no 2 is here. Whats the priority on Istapp, a side project or a hobby that made it take some time for the new album? Or simply trouble with member or just hard work to get the best possible material?

Istapp is more than a band. Istapp is an army that is always on the move to defeat and slay worshippers of the sun. After our victorious battles we gather our troops in the icy caves of Orrekulle and prepare ourselves for the next deadly strike. We have had some traitors in our ranks and they have suffered severely I can ensure you and now we are stronger than ever!"

Edit to add - also, be aware the final song on the new album is called Vit Makt ( White Power ) but according to a swede the lyrics are about the "power of white snow" not racial white power. Whether this is also being "ironic" or intentionally baiting for attention, or just dumb wording, I dunno.

They do and they don't. I had to revisit my opinion of them after catching them live a few times. The issue with Portal on cd/lp is that you're almost listening to a soundtrack for Lovecraft, and like an OST, without the visual companion, it can get tiresome very, very quickly. Especially on an album like Swarth which is almost devoid of actual non-disjointed riffs.

Live, it's a bit of a nightmare opera. Lovecraft meets Nightmare on Bald Mountain. There's camp elements (like there are in any old horror movies etc) to the music you don't even realise are there in the recording, but come across in the live show.

See that's the vibe I got from the music and it's what pulled me in. They're a band I have to get into the atmosphere for and that's alright. They do a great job of it, I bet the live show is fantastic.

I saw Portal and Impetuous Ritual in NYC recently and loved it. They really got the creepy feel across well. I wouldn't call it campy, maybe because I mostly describe things I hate that way, but the guy is wearing a veiled silky headdress wrapped in strands of pearls. He still makes it work without coming off as silly which was really impressive.

Can't wait until they come back. I need more of that quivering creeping mass of texture.

Good post.

I like listening to Portal as sort of a Lovecraftian guided meditation thing though, just closing my eyes and letting the music help me visualize. I can see how it'd be more impactful as a live performance, but I don't think the lack of visual accompaniment makes it tiresome, personally.

Caught the end of their set at MDF (was watching DRI) and was disappointed by the lack of cuckoo clock. It was pretty entertaining how they went over their set time so the venue turned off the PA, but Portal just kept playing until their song was done.

My extremely drunk friend, who had somehow gotten a hold of a bunch of glow sticks while we were watching DRI, threw one onstage during Portal's set and it stuck in the guitarist's robes. Then he threw himself out of the venue and we found him outside afterward looking extremely disappointed with himself.

That's kind of a heavy word, you can be tongue-in-cheek without being full-on parody. Garm went around as Fiery G. Maelstrom for awhile in Borknagar while he was making fun of ICS Vortex but I don't think anyone would call The Olden Domain a parody record

I'm not going to judge you for that, but I honestly think that a lot of the cyber metal bands they inspired have a more interesting take on things, especially artists like Sybreed who focus more on the electronic soundscapes. (also I can't stand Burton Bell's vocals at all)

Id actually be pretty thankful if you could name a few bands inspired by or in the same vein as FF since I have found myself way outside of the musical loop since I got old. I do remember Sybreed from their 2004(?) album, but totally forgot about them until you mentioned it. And now found out they split up last year.

Neurotech is good, Vortech are decent, Mechina are good if you can handle symphonic cheese, Tyrant of Death has some great stuff but is too prolific for his own good...

Blood Stain Child are also great in my opinion but that's less cyber metal and more really flamboyantly gay melodeath covered in trance synths.
