If you absolutely must play Dead Souls then yeah I'd recommend it solely for Majima's role in it. He knows this is the only way a psycho like him will ever be playable in Yakuza and he goes 110% in it.

The Daigo stuff was probably the highlight of the game for me. I loved the game in spite of how awful it played mostly because the writers kind of went crazy with the characters since they knew the story wasn't going to be canon.

Dead Souls is fun when you remember that it isnt a shooter, its a beat em up with guns instead of fists.

I watched a little bit of the Giant Bomb Quick Look for Y:DS. Someone compared it to RDR: Undead Nightmare, and it does come off like DLC for Y4. It's pretty cheap, and they said in the Quick Look that it's not really hard, so maybe I'll give it a shot.

Incidentally, I found out that the Kamurocho in Yakuza is based off of the Kabukicho district in Shinjuku. However, there is a Kamurocho located in Gifu. Is there a reason why they didn’t just call it Kabukicho?

I went and started reading today and discovered just how many characters in Isin are based on/named after real historical persons, which of course makes me wonder how many other allusions I've been missing in these games. Such dense games.

Anyway, Sanders, is there a way to cheese the casino in this game to get mad ryo?

As far as I know, all the major characters in the game are real historical people. Well, I don't know anything about the impostor conspiracy theory characters inside the Shinsengumi.

I've been looking for the usual luck changing equippable items but haven't found any yet.

They are thinking "Hm....samurais swording the poo poo out of bad guys while singing karaoke and stuff? That's not a concept that Westerners can really understand, we'd better not take the risk of selling it there."

Right or wrong, that is probably what they are thinking.

edit: one thing to keep in mind though is that Yakuza games have absolutely stupid amounts of voice and text that needs to be translated, even compared to JRPGs, and that isn't cheap. Even if it's just subtitles and no dub.

"Cabin"? That's not a kind way to talk about a pretty nice 19th century Japanese home.

Anyway, there's a boat that launches from pretty close to your hotel, just walk out the door and take a right, and walk along the waterfront. You can tell it's the right one because it's free (the one that takes you to the bad part of town costs 500 mon).

It's not like its inherently a second home or anything, it IS Haruka's home, the one she grew up in and her parents left to her. The other guy reacted with surprise when Kiryu Sakamoto Saito said he wanted to use it as one.

edit: I'm surprised how unimportant Haruka's role is in the story this time. In Kenzan she was absolutely central.

Yeah. This seems like kind of a silly argument though. The game refers to it as your 別宅 and I thought "cabin" was a reasonable translation; I guess "cottage" would have been more accurate.

Anyway how could they make her as central as normal? Oryô is the real-life wife of Sakamoto Ryôma, right?

I wanted to ask about this too. If Yakuza 5 does get translated, would it still be on PS3, or would they port it over to PS4 somehow? I can't really see SEGA translating it just for PS3. Ishin is available for both PS3 and PS4, but would they do the same thing if they localized Y5?

These children have taught me how to believe.
I doubt they'd spend the extra money on moving all the assets to PS4 even if they did get around to localizing Y5. There just aren't enough consoles in the wild for it to make sense, especially since 4 did really poorly despite the ps3 being pretty decently rooted when it finally came out. As much as I love Yakuza, I don't think I'd be willing to spend $400 just to play a slightly-better looking version of a 2+ year old game.

That'd sell me on a PS4 honestly, I really want to play a localized Y5 and Ishin. (And 1&2 HD). (And Shenmue 3 which will totally be announced for the PS4 at the Shenmue post-mortem at GDC next week!...okay no it won't.) But for now, I'll wait.

I don't really see that happening either. I'd have to think that if it were translated, it might make it on the Playstation Now service (provided that takes off without issue).

So I finished up Yakuza: Dead Souls a few days ago, and I have to say that it wasn’t too bad. The aiming system is kind of weird, but I found that it’s pretty easy to adapt to. The trick I found was to quickly tap L2 so you snap your aim quickly to the next enemy's weak point. Something that I did notice early on is that the game suffers from slowdown when there are too many things on-screen, which can be annoying in spots.

Having played Y4 & Dead Souls, I was thinking about picking up either Y1 next, as I’d like to play through the rest of the series in order.

No way, Y1 is still sweet as hell. I just played the HD version a few months ago. Basically the only way its inferior to the newer games mechanically is how Kiryu won't track enemies that move side to side during combat, necessitating keeping your combos shorter.

That's why you install the game to your PS2's hard drive.

Your PS2 does have a hard drive that you install games to, doesn't it? :colbert:

I think that the opening of Yakuza 1 and the ending are really effective but the game play improvements that the series went through over time make the middle kind of rough to go back to. On the other hand, if someone is coming off of the dead and hasn't played any of them, it's a fine place to start.

Can't really be helped; PS2 network adapters (and for that matter original-size PS2s) and IDE hard drives are both in short supply and adapting them for SATA properly will basically ruin the network adapter for sale.

Early Slims had power and signal to the IDE pins but no actual connections; there were solder kits around to put a hard drive bay under the PS2. Later than that and you're stuck with USB 1.1, which is fun* with FMV. ... Actually, the very latest PS2s couldn't be softmodded, only chipped.

At least PCSX2 is in a pretty good place now.

I found the combat really tedious and I didn't end up finishing it.

Annoying Ishin thing: I got a 10-star sword for clearing all the substories, a 5-star one for eating all the meals, and a 7-star one for clearing the first cave, but the stupid leader of the sword dojo wants me to show him a 6-star one.

They work fine except for some weird bloom-blur bug. You can turn on some gpu hw hacks to get rid of the bloom-blur but this'll cause a few textures to be black and tv screen/ads around Kamurocho won't show up.
