This is 100% how treating new guys goes in the military so much so it makes me laugh until I cry. What's funny to me is every little subsection of the military has its own version of it, even the personnel people and medical.

I've liked my kindle paper white, no eye strain like with reading on my tablet or phone. And I can now easily travel with every good SCI FI book I can think of, with access to a bunch that I haven't.

My first-gen paperwhite has lasted for ages with no problems at all, and the format is fine for straightforward novels/nonfiction that I'm not worried about retaining for research or work or something. On the other hand, if the book is in any way dense or convoluted, nothing beats a real book for being able to flip back more than a couple pages easily, scan and re-read difficult passages, and look smart on the train.

On top of that, I can now flip pages single-handedly while walking/hiking, can read at night without a light level that keeps me awake, and can re-read entire book series I read in German as a kid in the original.

I held out really loving long, because I love physical books, but poo poo's convenient, yo

I love my paperwhite, and I even still have my 3G...though I'll probably sell it since I use it mostly as a coaster. Books are usually cheaper electronically, I used to store relevant pubs in pdf format for quick (unofficial) reference, and it made bringing reading material on deployments/TDY a hell of a lot easier.

I've got an old Sony reader that's getting buggy with age but I don't really see a good replacement. All I want is a cheap e-ink book reader that isn't locked into Amazon's system so I can read free public domain books on the road. I have a massive real library at home so I don't use digital books often at all.

I have a Kindle and you aren't locked in to Amazon's poo poo at all.
