This is a weird position to take since I'm certain that everyone creatively involved with making Neo Yokio would have to be anime fans. It's the equivalent of liking a band but hating every band that inspired them.

okay this is an extremely :yikes: subject for me to be tackling and i'm asking for a lot of trust that I'm saying this in good faith, so just kind of bear with me

Made in Abyss, both versions, is a story about (essentially) small children being sent to explore a hosed-up eldritch hellscape where literally everything including the air is trying to kill you. in my book, this justifies some level of "hosed up things happening to kids" before I start going "ok this poo poo was written with one hand, I'm out."

the manga hit my NOPE threshold very, very, very quickly. i'm pretty sure the guy who draws the manga is an actual chomo.

the anime, on the other hand, basically scales it back as far as humanly possible and only keeps what they literally couldn't change or remove, because shockingly enough they wanted it to be able to air on general-audiences TV. the very, very tiny amount of remaining sexual content has way more of a Quest for Fire vibe to it than a "weird pedo porn" vibe to it.

(it's worth noting that MiA gets a bit of extra leeway from me, though, compared to other anime, because everything around the :yikes: stuff is just so goddamn cool. the Abyss is one of the most badass settings I've seen in anime in a long time. Bondrewd might be legitimately one of the most awesome villains I've ever seen in an anime. even past specific things, the fact that it's essentially a hosed-up sci-fi version of your average wilderness survival movie/series is Extremely My poo poo. but even with that extra leeway, I had to go "gently caress this" on the manga, and the anime is the only version I would even slightly recommend seeking out.)

The rings you have to jump through in order to justify watching this poo poo.

I don’t know if it’s been discussed before but Norsemen on Netflix is loving hilarious. I’m not done but the gist of it is Vikings but as a workplace mockumentary with modern dialogue. It’s smart, dark, and makes me laugh hard.

Watched Devilman Crybaby last night and marathoned the whole series. You were all right it was pretty gonzo. I remember watching parts of the original OVA and I was surprised that they had managed to keep a lot of the really over the top violence that I thought was really cool as a young edgelord.

So that explains why he did not answer. He had no mouth to answer with. There is nothing left of him but his ears.

The marketing for It Comes at Night was all wrong. The trailers present it as a white-knuckle post-apocalyptic zombiethon when it is actually a very subtle and considered character study with an imperceptibly slow ramp up in tension (with no zombies). It's no wonder the movie has such negative word of mouth.

I went in with, I think was about sad people in a house and from the title and frankly the movie hints at a monster, that doesn't arrive. And the ooh dark ending. Bleah

The true monster is man. Welcome to The Twilight Zone.

The problem with approaching the advertisement for It Comes at Night is that it needs to functionally compartmentalize the main features of the film. In the film itself, there is in fact no monster, no hint of a monster, the plot is about a deadly contagion, and the "It" of the title is referring to nightmares. So when you boil that down to a two-minute stinger, you have pure evocation divorced from plot, so the irony becomes that a completely new narrative is created in the mind of the spectator, in which the "It" is referring to some kind of boogie-man. Potentially, some spectators may have assumed it was a monster movie because of its aesthetic and titular similarities to It Follows.

The marketing wasn't "wrong," per se. They did everything they were supposed to do: showing tense, spooky imagery while giving away as little of the plot as possible, drawing in the viewer based on the filmmaking rather than superficial content. It's a very interesting example of where the trailer is a work of experimental art that's almost as compelling as the film itself. The trailer puts you into the mindset of the characters, it invents a diabolic force that the film then clarifies is just the abyss of their own fears looking back at them. You are the monster.

but they could have done this and also made the movie fun to watch. it was in no way terrible, but it didnt break any new ground imo.

All this talk of It Comes At Night makes me think of this lovely movie called something like It Knows or It Follows I saw at a film festival.

Probably half the dialogue was ‘What is it?’ ‘It’s it.’ like that Faith No More song.

a movie that doesnt make me bored is fun to watch. it felt like a zombieless walking dead (i hate the walking dead) but with dream sequences and more atmosphere(only good part of the film). i guess im just bored of “man is the true monster” films/media. its getting played out.

If you liked It Comes at Night (I did), you should catch the director's first movie Krisha, on Prime. Wrote, directed , and edited the whole thing, shot in his mom's house using a lot of his family members as cast. It was hard to watch, but great. That dude is a real talent and really knows how to move a camera.

A bit late to the party, but Altered Carbon stays legit. I'm up to the seventh episode and so far it maintained its quality really nicely. It actually manages to nail that kind of noir-ish cyberpunk atmosphere, which is pretty surprising for an apparently quite big-budget show that aims at a mainstream audience.

That narrows it down. ‘It Knows’ was the crappy film I was thinking of. I called the ending and left after 20 minutes.

Someone said it earlier, but everything involving the cop's family in Altered Carbon is terrible and feels totally out of place. I really hope that was just a one episode thing and not part of a bigger trend, because they just wasted like half an episode on it.

He wasn't quite as lithe as Weller was back in the '80s, but Kinnaman wasn't particularly jacked for RoboCop. There was a lot of padding in that suit to make it actually comfortable to wear and move in.
