so far, I'd have to say Forest of Stars put out my favorite metal album this year with Beware the Sword you Cannot See. The emphasis on cello and orchestral chamber instrumentation, the over the top storytelling vocals and alliterative wackiness of the lyrics, and just the sheer audacity of experimentation has me so excited like few metal albums this year have.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erjCCcqlwL8

These kinds of vocals are rather new discovery to me. Especially the amount of storytelling and spoken word parts. I'd love to hear anything remotely like this.

also kinda unrelated, but my band's second ever show is opening up for Cattle Decapitation and Abiotic in November!! that's pretty lucky, considering we aren't really death metal, and more of a mathcore/art metal group (our first show was opening up for Melt Banana). I kinda hope Travis Ryan either shits on us, or respects that we aren't generic death metal or deathcore at least. i'd love to get picked apart by you goons as well, so take a listen to the tracks we have up! https://www.spiresofthelunarsphere.bandcamp.com

If you want to go off into the cheese deep-end, Bal-Sagoth have done this for years, although their only truly good stuff was their first few albums in the mid-late 90s ( which also vary in style pretty much every album ). It's less "weird" musically than A Forest of Stars of course, who are quite weird, much more straight-forward "battle" metal with tons of movie soundtrack keyboards. But Byron varies his vocals alot within each song and is quite literally telling a story. Their CD books used to be like 20+ pages of story (fantasy, of course) for each song and he'd just sing portions of them. You really get the sense of listening to a story being told when listening.

They practically tell a story with the song titles:

This is "To Dethrone The Witch-Queen Of Mytos K'unn (The Legend Of The Battle Of Blackhelm Vale)" from the album "Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9hXyT3nRa8

This is when they started getting even MORE cheesy/theatrical with the Battle Magic album. This is "The Dark Liege Of Chaos Is Unleashed At The Ensorcelled Shrine Of A'Zura Kai (The Splendour Of A Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath The Blazon Of The Hyperborean Empire - Part II)"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW1sNjI1PDo

Bonus: the guitarist & keyboardist from Bal-Sagoth formed another band since Bal-Sagoth are on hiatus or whatever, called Kull. This is a demo track that's kind of rough but is like Bal-Sagoth before they get fruitier:

I am definitely into this, including that music video. The music takes the instrumentation i love from early symphonic black metal like Emperor but makes it much more fun and rhythmically interesting, and the vocals make me feel like I'm listening to He-Man from another room

In your defense ( and mine ) it's the best thing they've released since the 90's. It's equal parts Dusk & Her Embrace + Cruelty and the Beast. I'm pretty sure they just ripped the riff from Onward Christian Soldiers (1:00 -> 1:10 ) from Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids on Cruelty and the Beast ( 1:38 -> 2:05 ).

Edit - totally unrelated, but Abbath released a new official video for his new single, "Fenrir Hunts". As expected it is awesome and Immortal 2.0.

Same WRT the new Fear Factory. It's REALLY loving good. Like the best parts of Demanufacture and Obsolete. The lead single they put out kinda sucked - but everything is classic and good. Burton can scream again.

It really is mostly the best CoF parts mixed in with the dumb cut out. The riffs are consistently awesome. I still don't always like listening to Dani but his vocals are great sometimes. I might get bored of it but so far it's the most surprising 2015 album for me.

This sounds so much better than their last album, The Unspoken King. A quick comparison has me noticing the drums on this new song sound so much more intimate and more like Cryptopsy than the previous album's "big" drum sound. This is some pretty good Cryptopsy. Eh, I'm not feeling it. It's not offensively bad really, but while it was playing I couldn't shake the thought that I could be listening to Unleash the Archers instead, since they have a better singer and much better songs. Not that they're exactly the same style, but still.

It's not as good as their previous albums to be sure, and some of the songs have pretty lame lyrics ( see: "Flesh" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ghltZ_vcRE ) probably because they tried to do an album/year and she seemingly wasn't exagerrating when she stated she came up with most of the lyrics for this album either in high school or in a truck stop bathroom on one of the previous tours. Funny enough I have the opposite issue to you - I just can't get into Unleash the Archers.

I know they aren't the same style (UtA = power metal, Huntress = heavy metal? I guess ) so I hesitate to compare them at all except that they have a female lead doing non-growling vocals, but something about Unleash the Archers just seems...discordant ( or something ) to me. Like the vocals don't line up with the music or the cadence is off or something, IDK. [Edit to add] This video is an example of what bugs me: https://youtu.be/UOvZKJlrtk8?t=1m46s . The vocals are way slower than the drums/guitar or something during that whole section, it breaks my brain for some reason. It makes me feel like she's just doing her own thing screaming her rear end off ( she is pretty amazing ) while the rest of the band are kind of also doing their own thing sort of at the same time.

I should like them - they are local and a friend of a friend was involved in mastering/mixing one or 2 of their albums, their vocalist is fantastic, they by all accounts are great live, etc etc. Despite all that I can't make it through an entire song.

Well I mainly just made that comparison because, as I said above, I've been listening to UtA a drat lot lately, and because they're superficially similar.

And I gotta say I'm glad my brain doesn't have such hiccups. I mean yeah, sure she's drawing the words out quite a bit, but it still fits together with the rest just fine, it's not like she's off beat or anything. I'm sure someone else could explain it better, I'm loving hopeless with music terminology.

I'm sure that she's singing in time with the beat but it must be a different timing or something because it doesn't SOUND like it to me for some reason. There's something about it that's off-putting on almost all of their songs, with the exception of Test Your Metal ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yctXV3uHBs ) which is much more traditional speed/80's metal where I think the band REALLY works well. She's also not doing the "slow warbling" vocals at all during that song - maybe I just don't like it when the vocals aren't following the beat the rest of the band is. If she did slow warbles when the beat was slowing down ( or stopped ) I'd be ok with it I guess? This is the only UtA song I actually have been able to listen to in full. It's not the power metalness of the rest of their songs - I like cheese and guitar wanking as much as the next person, I just don't think her vocal style ( or maybe "delivery" would be a better descriptor ) fits with her band most of the time - obviously a lot of people seem to disagree.

For example, after that UtA video I linked there was another link to Striker - Start Again and holy gently caress this is amazing and the video is pretty great too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zb-Pmo7bFA

If UtA went full 80's speed metal, or Brittney Slayes did a guest appearance with Striker, then I'd be 100% on-board.
