I've been really sinking my teeth into this podcast and been reading bits and pieces of the exile. the wistful and humorous depression of John and Mark is kinda a cozying effect while absorbing all these amazing histories

I wound up buying the Roger Crowley Venice book but actually read his other book on the fall of Constantinople first and it's a rollicking read. The few books I've read recommended by the show are informed (or appear so to me) but first and foremost know how to turn history into a drat good story.

The more I've learned about China, the less plausible the EU seems. China has not always been so centralized and of course is constituted of a ton of different ethnic groups, languages, and regions that I absolutely never, ever learned about in school - it makes one wonder if Napoleon or someone earlier had united and successfully held together Europe - that people would think of Europe the same way "it's all basically French" or "it's all German" - whichever would've consolidated a lasting state and identity. This is kind of half a thought but it just drives home that there's really no such thing as a European identity in the same way as there can be a Chinese identity. However authoritarian that identity has been imposed upon East Asia for so many centuries, it's certainly real now. Because we're past the point (I think) of a dominant force in Europe subjugating the entire continent. Obviously a good thing, Hitler was the last to try, but I guess climate disaster could give someone another go at it (Greater Serbia). So the idea of the EU was to attempt to consolidate the continent, economically, culturally, and politically through... neoliberalism, capitalism, no tariffs, and some unpopular financial institutions? It's pretty clear with the clusterfuck that is the EU in 2019 that "European" as an identity is pretty bunk unless it can be reformed on completely revolutionary grounds, and that would likely be a global effort at this point - but it sure as poo poo isn't going to come from the current EU and from Brussels with German capitalism leading and French capitalism playing second chair to it in the current configuration.

Might as well ask. Does anyone remember a War Nerd article or just the story in general about a lone American who travelled to Pakistan with the intention of fighting terrorists? I think he was mentally challenged and didn't wind up hurting anyone.

Maybe somebody else can give better help, this is all I remember: There have been some Syria stories...they talked about Kayla Mueller (young uh "idealistic" american human rights activist who went to Syria and got uh "forcibly married" and then was killed by her captors or a bomb or who knows). I don't know if they ever talked about Brace Belden or Kevin Dawes (also Syria stories). Most of the stories I can remember them talking about were disaffected westerners going to fight FOR ISIS or Al Queda.

Honestly, someone needs to make a John Dolan travel show. Just him stuck in hotel rooms around the world being a sad sack while paying too much for food delivery and having the locals try to sell him on timeshares. Every season finale he has to get to the airport before the local police find out that he made fun of their ancestors dying in a pike charge a thousand years ago in an article from 1998.

Because John and Mark are bad at computers, the rss link only gets sent out in the newsletters, instead of being available on the patreon page. There's one due any day now. They change it occasionally, when they see the number of downloads vastly exceeding the number of subscribers i guess. Joementum posted:Honestly, someone needs to make a John Dolan travel show. I think i said it before in the thread but the chit chat parts of the episodes should be free, with the guest chat and their own deep dives paywalled. i think it would bump the listenership a lot. There's an android (and others?) podcast listening app called Podbean that has the subscriber feed. Kind of sketchy because you don't actually need to subscribe to the patreon to get the podcast, but if you're a good person you already have so that doesn't matter.
