Slightly cheaper to send stuff back if I do both at once (which I would), but the idea of having spares is appealing. Will eventually rebuild them myself (when I have new pistons) and probably only buy another caliper if it is unserviceable, just a question of what I do in the meantime before MONDAY TRACKDAY GO VROOM TIME.

Didn't realize you weren't in the US or somewhere where it's easy to get parts.

Don't you have any junk yards around? Pull one off a junked car or find someone local parting one out and get a caliper that way.

While the MX5 isn't super-rare or anything, not that many seem to get junked. There are junkyard parts available, but all are far away so I'd have to pay to ship those too, bringing them to around $70. And I still wouldn't know anything about the quality of the seal and piston in those.
E: while there are still a few pick-n-pull junkyards around, I doubt I'd find an MX5 at any of the ones I know of nearby. Almost all of them are "a-la-carte parts" that they charge just a bit less than what's available "new". And very few are within reasonable distance from Stockholm to go and pick poo poo up, most of them are way out in the sticks.

I should have just ordered a rebuilt pair of calipers as soon as this happened (then I could have gotten parts shipped while I was away for a week), but then I would have learned less from, and you would have less fun at the mistakes I'm about to make this very minute.

Hatters gonna hat.
On the other hand, I have two salvage yard rear calipers on my car that have worked fine for about a year and the remanufactured one I tried first didn't last a week *not statistically significant. Individual results may vary*.

I also found out that there is a Mazda specific salvage yard (MazMart) that seemingly buys all the remotely fun junked Mazdas in the Atlanta metro area and thats why my (then) local Pull-a-Part never had any MX5s on the lot. Maybe there is something similar in your area?

Only in my dreams. In Sweden the MX-5 is far from rare but still a kind of "odd" car. I don't know of any brand-specific salvage yards, and if there were Mazda would be far down the list.

I got solid confirmation that there's no way I'll get the new pistons before the weekend, so since past me was stupid and didn't get the appropriate parts when there was still time, current and future me get to keep going down the rabbit hole of Stupid Things!

Hello mr left front brake.

There was a fair bit of pitting corrosion on one side of the piston, but most of it was shiny and nice. I guess the worst of it is where the seal sits when the pads are about 70% worn. The bad scoring of the outermost part of the piston is all due to me twisting and pulling it out with a pair of pliers (I'm at home with a very limited set of tools and no compressor). It's getting replaced anyway so gently caress it. I lightly sanded down the pitting with 800-grit paper (finest I could find nearby) and that made it feel a lot smoother.

The caliper itself looked all good, no signs of corrosion anywhere important. Some gunk in the seal groove was easily cleaned out, as was the rust in the groove for the dust boot.

I put in new rubber bits and threw it back together. Had difficulty getting the piston in straight, but it worked out eventually. Pretty sure I didn't get the dust boot quite seated, but I'm only driving this for a few more weeks this year anyway and piston is throwaway. I've only driven it for a short test drive after this, but the caliper doesn't seem to be dragging at all. I'll put the fresh pads in to bring the piston back in (I'm just guessing that the position of the piston and the pitting has something to do with it), but after that it's just hoping that it holds up for a day at the track. Going to Mantorp Park together with a friend who has an NC PRHT.

In other news I sold my old beat up Volvo V40 the other day, so now I don't have any cars with rear seats anymore.

For future reference a regular old air duster can has enough juice to pop the pistons out.

I actually tried that. It moved a little bit but not all the way out, which I guess was when it got stuck on the "trouble spot". Didn't get a good enough seal, and possibly my air duster thing (which actually is propane) is a bit weak. Also tried a bike pump, but I had nothing useful on hand to make that seal properly either.

I probably could have held the air duster upside down to make it spit out a bunch of cold liquid, and then just hold my thumb over the hole while it boils off and builds up pressure, but I didn't think of that. Might try next time for science.

FWIW I used a cigarette lighter air pump (the kind you keep in the trunk for flats), but I bet it'd work with a bicycle pump or whatever.

Looking at a "used" 2016 Club this weekend with 3,000 miles on it.

What issues should I be on the look out for? Soft top marks from it rubbing (is the updated soft top mentioned in the TSB available, and if it is, how would I tell if the vehicle has the old or new soft top)?

Anything else?

Ask if they had an alignment done ever... It's under warranty and there are a handful of TSBs out, so I wouldn't worry too much. The real "problem" spots are the soft top, AC O-Rings, and the transmission.

The soft top might be solved now, that's a TSB with a new P/N (not just the Grand Touring top/frame, brand new P/N for the frame and top). The AC O-Ring affects the first first first cars off of the line, probably not an issue for you at all. The transmission will get replaced under warranty, but who knows when/if (it's gonna be when) it fails; I have 11k on mine and I beat on it, but maybe I have superb stick handling skills or something.

what are the best extras to ask for when negotiating (i am rubbish at haggling)? I always try for an extra key fob and floor mats; if it's never been aligned would an alignment be a good ask?

Usually you can get free labor stuff pretty easily. Washes, details, etc. Oil changes are pretty easy as well.

Beyond that, I ask for rubber mats, tint, wheel locks, and any cheap accessories.

If you want it, try to get the navigation SD card as well. It's $400 MSRP and all that's needed to install it is sliding it in.

Edit: Also, check the top straps that go from the rear bar over the window to under the liner. Mine has broken the passenger strap already in 600 miles and I expect the driver side to do the same eventually.

I don't like dealerships working on my case, and the accessory list is fairly empty. I'd go for rubber floor mats and take it to a local shop to get it aligned properly.

Pretty disappointed in the IL Motorsports soft top weather seals.

First off they sent me two of the passenger side middle one. Second there are gaps all over the place that my 20 year old seals didn't have. Even after adjusting the frames a bit.

So uhh. Go OEM. I forgot why I didn't because its the same price through the Mazdaspeed site.

Miata parts for sale on Facebook seems willing to ship and has good prices from what I've seen. Also Miata Karts of Murica probably has folks with parts to sell as they ghettocet their Miatas.

OK. So I have a 99 with 165k on it. Car was having a bad miss so I figured it was new coil pack time. Replaced thst yesterday. Still has a slight hesitation so I ordered a new set of plug wires through Napa (yes ngk wires). Well I had to go to work yesterday so I went ahead without the new wires. I went ahead to leave work last night, and nothing. Kept turning over nothing..... Well plug wires came in today. Threw them on at work still nothing... At this point I'm thinking maybe the coil was bad. After poking around a bit I checked the fuse box under the hood. And it looks like this 80a one (the black one) is bad. Does this all make sense? I'm hoping I can get to autozone and try a new one. Any other suggestions anyone?

After grabbing a friend to verify spark I'm thinking the same. I have a fuel filter I'm gonna toss on in the am. I'll also check the fuel pump after. I can hear the relay just couldn't verify the pump working off sound because of all the crickets and poo poo outside.. Would be a whole lot easier if I had the car at home! And yeah replaced that fuse. No dice. But hey it was only three bux.
Edit. Thinking about it in did run the car down under 1/8 a tank right when this issue started. And my local places are not known to have the best quality gas. I found out the hard way with a 6 grand bill on my tdi jsw for water in the fuel.

Update: Yeah it's the pump. Good call!
Now I gotta deal with getting the darn thing out. I have a hard dog sport roll bar so I'm sure it's gonna take some wiggling around.
