The amazing thing about Dinos is that no one wanted them about twenty years ago and prices have exploded. You'd go to classic car shows and hear owners being ear-bashed because Dinos "weren't real Ferraris". Sometimes change is good.

Quite amazing to step in there and see a gleaming red Dino sat there. I'll try get a pic next time i see him.

I don't want to be responsible for a bunch of AI rage-deaths. E: Ah screw it. These prices are in GBP. The first price on the left is a dealer price. The next three prices are private sales in descending condition (with the first one being 'mint'). Why yes, I'll take an MG6R4 for 18,500 GBP. Mint R5 Turbo 2s were turning over for around 12,500 GBP. Now those cars go for between 50,000 GBP to 75,000 GBP. A 6,000 mile Testarossa three years ago would have cost you 40,000 GBP. Now the same car will set you back around two to three times that. The less said about the price of Lancia Delta Integrales the better. I had a chance as a teenager to buy a Dino for 15k and just didn't have a way to get the money. Twelve years later that car just sold for almost 90 in worse shape

To be fair, if you bought a Dino as a teenager I'm sure that 12 years later it too would have been in worse shape.

I plan to buy a classic car when I move back to Europe, but all the cars that I wanted which were within my budget of around 20-25k euros incl taxes are slipping away, E30 M3, early 80's 911, Integrale, early Esprit, even good condition 944 Turbo/S2's are getting more and more expensive each time I look

They still have some Integrales floating around and the bulk of their roads are unsalted so they haven't had the chance to rust through yet.

This quote from the Ars Technica article about the Forza guys makes me see red: quote:There’s a lot of fear in the auto industry right now concerning the indifference many younger people now feel toward owning a car. Whatever the reasons—too many competing interests, environmental concerns, not having any money because of our new economic reality—it’s prompting a lot of soul searching among manufacturers. More than just a business concern, those embedded in car culture also worry about a new generation that doesn't care about automobiles in the same way.

I'm 34 years old (starting to exit that "young" demographic, I suppose) and I can name maybe one half NEW car that I'd be interested in, and that's with a lot more cash to throw around than the usual kid who's supposed to take on a loan to drive to make a whopping 40k a year if they're lucky. Most cars are appliances this day and age, car tooning is more or less dead, SCCA road racing is on life support outside of Miata stuff... Outside of enthusiasts who are into their own used garbage, it's a pretty dire time to be excited by cars.

It's so condescending and the article barely mentions the issue of money I remember a Road and Track article that went sort of like that too, where they picked up some rich kid from Manhattan, one of the few places on earth where you'd be totally justified in not giving a poo poo about cars even as an appliance, and took him to drive Lamborghinis around a track and had him chauffeured around in a Bentley for a week, and then showed him an old BMW for make a nice weekend toy, then walked away from the article saying that "we just need to bombard everyone with the enthusiast lifestyle, and they'll have our exact taste in cars in no time at all!" The end of hilariously low prices for old Group B rockets was probably always going to happen, just look back at the stories of super cheap muscle cars being bought and then immediately raced into the ground or scrapped because the people didn't care about them, and fast forward to ten years ago when old people were nostalgic for them anjd everyone saw Barrett-Jackson on the tv box and all of a sudden their cars were immaculate $50k+ classics. And those at least had the advantage of being pumped out in the thousands, instead of the 200 or so RS200s out there. e: Given that it's just a normal awd car but backwards, it might just be easier to get some steel tubes and an old hatchback and just build your own group b car at this point. razorscooter fucked around with this message at 17:27 on May 25, 2015 |
