re: w8/w8.1 update fuckery, it affects server 2012r2 too

specifically if you say, use microsoft's latest hyper-v and use a gen2 hyper-v vm and do a plain, stock, completely unmodified oob install of server 2012r2 in the vm it is literally impossible to run any updates

because gen2 vms use uefi and so turn on "secureboot" by default.

a boot so secure that it literally prevents windows' own trusted installer from updating any code at boot time, causing any update requiring a reboot to fail

so if you want to use secureboot and keep your wandows up to date every month you need to do minimum two shutdown/boot cycles, because you can't disable or enable secureboot once the vm is running.

this is known and apparently intended behaviour. because gently caress you, that's why
