grab a Wombat too, that thing is awesome https://www.bigmessowires.com/usb-wombat/ sadly out of stock at the moment, but it is super useful to stick your old macs behind a KVM switch and it even works in both directions

One of my first early computer memories is having that blue cat background and playing a Peanuts edutainment game or Arthur’s Teacher Trouble. What an amazing keyboard this was, even if it got rear end nasty. I love transparent case electronics and man I’m hoping companies can cash in on my sad millennial nostalgia. Would I buy a M1 MacBook Air if it had the see through blueberry iBook plastic? With a ton of shame and credit card debt yes. I want to be able to see my computer on the inside, goddamnit.

My current PC has a glass side so I look in and revel at the lack of RGB. I like that it's shadowy and mildy ominous in there. It also gives me an easy way to know I really need to blow the loving dust out, which I keep meaning to get around to. Speaking of old but good Apple designs, the G3 Powerbooks were fantastic. They were powerful, and easy to work on. Everything made sense and was well-designed. Then they went to G4 and the apparent laptop design philosophy shifted from "friendly to use and maintain" to "gently caress you forever." The G4 towers were still fine, but the laptops and iMacs became hateful.

Was it the G4 icebooks that would cook themselves and bloat in the middle, giving a curve to the keyboard?

G3 icebook was amazing because you could remove the top lid panel (the main back with the lit Apple logo), dunk it in an alcohol bath to remove the internal white paint, and be left with a perfectly clear acrylic lid. Then you could get a dragon poster from walmart, cut it to size, and sandwich it under the acrylic cover, leading to the most badass laptop in college ever

Did you cut out the dragons eyes and position it right over the glowing logo?

the cheese grater mac pro 4,1 and 5,1 series from 2009 and 2010 was the absolute pinnacle of modern apple design and they were idiot assholes for not just making new revisions of it forever. RIP Xserve too i like all the apple tower machines though, maybe with the exception of the water cooled G5 models that spill their liquid guts all over the power supply and end up as a pile of rust

There was a period when the aluminium macbooks were easy to work on, too - apart from the pentalobe screws, it was just a case of removing a handful of screws and doing normal laptop things under the lid. I don't know how easy the M1 machines are to open, but at the current level of integration you can't upgrade anything and I doubt there are that many replaceable parts either. Edit: though I did saw a MB Pro 2013 battery loose from the super aggressive glue they use with dental floss not too long ago. That probably counts against "easy to work on". My grandpa had the G3 Wall Street (I think I could be off slightly) and it was the first laptop I ever learned how to use. What an absolute beast and I thought it was so cool I could lay down and still play a game! Up until my 09 MBP I’ve been able to do some nice minor hardware fixes with no issue but now, thanks Apple.

I'm currently posting on a M1 Macbook Air and I love this thing so much, the amount of power is incredible for the price and I have grown to take the battery life as a given, I don't think I could go back to a 'regular' laptop after getting used to this. At the same time I'm kinda sad knowing that all the advantages this thing has are bought at the expense of making it completely impossible to do any maintenance on.

Jim Silly-Balls posted:When will the M1 machines be able to run iOS apps? That’s what I’m interested in It already does, since it was released. It's on the app developer to enable it though for their app. You could sideload apps that didn't directly support it at first, but Apple enabled service side checks to prevent that from happening anymore. Awful.app is on the allow list though.

The annoying thing about those G3 and Titanium PowerBooks is how springy the keyboard is, as it is meant to be pulled out easily (same with iBook keyboards). The Aluminium PBs had far better keyboard feel. Still, I'd love to get my hands on a Titanium PB with the DVI connector. Gave a 1GHz model to a co worker years ago. Got some software for my Apple //e Platinum from the US yesterday Other than a diagnostic disk, this is the first boxed software I have for it. I also have a Booti card in it which is loaded with about 300 games. Sadly Carmen fails to read side B of the first disk, however AppleWorks and California Games seem to load up fine. The monitor is fine, my iPhone hates taking photos of it

I remember Epyx Summer Games being the trial by fire for joysticks on the C64. I think Winter Games might have been rough on them, too, but I mostly remember being able to cheese one of the events by just randomly flailing at high speed. Never had California Games, but I assume it was similar.
