Yeah, I'm a giant nerd for Persona Q and I got the game early and even I felt it was dragging near the end. Maybe because the difficult is easy and the persona fusing system sucks. Also, I'm replaying Mana Khemia and god is Flay such a good character. Too bad they thought the sequel needed everyone to be assholes for some reason.

Judging from what I'm reading they almost exclusively published pachinko games on the playstation 1/2 and some other stuff on portable systems. They dissolved Nautilus as a studio a long time ago and with the creative talent gone and their American publishing partner bankrupt, they seem content to squat on the rights and just make casino machines. Funding an anime would have probably been an easier way to go about that, but RPGs were really hot in the PS1/PS2 era.

I remember when the stores were getting rid of the second and third Shadow Hearts games, I had a hell of a time trying to track down a good condition copy of the first game(which was published in America by Midway). But I find a copy at an out of the way Gamestop for 12 bucks, and then I somehow stumble across Koudelka complete for 15. It's right up there with finding a complete launch copy of Noctourne and black label Disgaea at a soon to be gone FYE.

Suikoden Tactics started off pretty tame and never got anywhere, but that ending... : Son, this is your mother. I'll leave it to your imagination. Now, before I eventually start on S 5 without a guide... are there any vital but easy to overlook support characters like that sneeze teleporting girl and Cedric in S 4?

For supports I think I only really used the doctors, and I think they're auto-recruits. In S5 you get battle characters who also have support abilities accessible in the menu, so you don't necessarily have to hunt down a support character with the same ability. You'll probably see what I mean right away with one of your starting character's skill training option. There are also a couple characters like Cornelio who change the battle music when they're in your party. Nice to have if you get tired of the default. Other that supports, if you're worried about missing stars, Cathari is super easy to miss, but you won't have to worry about that until pretty close to the endgame.

Xenogears Progress: Well, swimming upstream through that aqueduct was annoying. I Defended until that brat kid tired out. The first time I fought Ramsus, he went into his counter stance before I attacked, so he dodged all my attacks for a couple rounds. Then I thought "Oh, I get it, this is a supposed to lose fight!" so I sat there and let him wail on me. And then, uh, I got dumped to the title screen.

So when I fought Elly I tried Defending like I did with that little kid, then when I realized I was going to have to beat the crap out of her it was too late and I had to sit through that cutscene all over again. Then I barely got by that turtle robot boss, the one that grabs your teammates and beats you with them. I was in the double-digits when he fortunately croaked. Every time this game gets some steam going, along comes the plot to turn it into a book. And really, how dense do you have to be to not know who that red gear really is? Oh, and if Fei's father turns out to be God I want it on record that I called it.

Just finished disc 1 on Parasite Eve 2 adn I really enjoy it. It does what it does well and the monsters are kinda neat, the pre-rendered backgrounds are great and grinding is fun. I really wanted to like PE1, but the combat system is a bit of a drag and not fun (running around very resticted area while waiting for the ATB gauge) and the weapon upgrading system was confusing. 3rd Birthday is supposedly pretty bad, right? Kinda shame that this series didn't continue, but I guess it would have just been ruined like final fantasy. Modern day rpgs are extrmely my thing, but besides Shenmue, Yakuza and this, that's apparently it.

The gameplay in 3rd Birthday is serviceable but the everything else is stupid at best and entirely the wrong kind of creepy at worst. It's short so you should play it just to see how loving stupid it is.

I will take every opportunity I can get to poo poo on Motoru Toriyama so gently caress that guy for whatever he did in 3rd Birthday. What was confusing about the weapon upgrade system though? You basically remove and install features from guns and attach them to others, at the cost of the original gun itself unless you have a Super Tool. It's a bit of a lousy explanation but once you get going, making crazy super guns gets pretty amusing as more gun features show up.

nuru posted:Please elaborate. I loved 1 and thought 2 was bad. The gameplay is not too awful, but it's a third-person shooter controlled with the analog nub. Only you can transfer between the bodies of allied soldiers, and telefrag enemies, and buy weapons and upgrades, and play around with some DNA enhancement grid where you build up various abilities like triggering invincibility frames after taking damage. Somehow it's all more sluggish and grindy than it sounds, but it plays much better on an emulator with a proper controller plugged in. Oh, and the main character in Japan was voiced but the same VA as Lightning in FF13, so there's her unlockable outfit to rip to shreds as well. Motomu Toriyama loving loves Lightning.

Also that "makes no sense" is not generic JRPG rhetoric like you hear with other RPGs. 3rd Birthday's story is about as nonsensical as it comes. I think they just unleashed some fan fiction writers and wanted to compete against Metal Gear Solid in the crazy department but it has zero of the charm. It's just not a very good overall experience and a waste of the PE IP.

Yeah, it's an incredibly dumb time travel story that has almost zero relevance to past games. The DNA Board is a tacked on game mechanic and the only thing that even refers to the biology themed original games. I know they lost the license to the original name but they could've at least tried writing something more in theme. According to Wikipedia: quote:Scenario director Motomu Toriyama conceived story concepts such as the snowy New York setting and the image of a bloodstained wedding dress. Over the course of the development, he adjusted the plot numerous times to be more adult-oriented and to include narrative twists. The scenario for the game was written by anime scriptwriter Toshimitsu Takeuchi who had previously worked on the series Sgt. Frog and Hataraki Man as well as an original video animation for The Prince of Tennis. bloodychill posted:I heard the game was backwards from every way possible from its gameplay to its treatment of the subject matter and women characters. Yeah BOF 3,4, and Dragon Quarter are all not expensive at all and you would need to spend more than all of them combined to get anywhere in that phone game. Capcom's flagship RPG is Monster Hunter now, which is not a bad thing.

i own physical and digital copies (where available) of bof 1-4 they're good fun games i really miss the archetypes and tropes of the bof 3/4 and would really like to see them return, but i am aware that they cannot be brought back, and indeed if they were, they would be the shambling reanimated corpses, painted up like a geisha to stumble into my living room and drape its cold arm along my shoulders. the temptation of painted up nostalgia coupled with the promise and disgust of necrophilia and disappointment

nuru posted:Please elaborate. I loved 1 and thought 2 was bad. It's also a game you can't even cheat through without it loving you. It takes a special kind of design to be so dickish that cheats will render the game unplayable/unwinnable. (There is a super mode you can transform into, but there is no way to cancel that transformation save letting the meter run out. Certain boss fights will have various required actions to progress the fight which the game, for some loving reason, does not let you perform in super mode. This means you cannot be killed and cannot kill the boss. It's a great thing to discover ONLY IN CERTAIN BOSS ENCOUNTERS, too.) Also I cannot stress enough that anyone calling that game's combat "servicable" is being generous. It's one of the worst third-person shooters I've ever played, mostly because it basically assumes you're going to body-swap away from super attacks and instakills, so the design is a huge "MAN gently caress THOSE OTHER DUDES" fest, and I have absolutely no idea why certain classes of weapon are even in the game. Can anyone think of a single time in that game the sniper rifle was worth fiddling with save like... I vaguely recall a sniper sequence in a helicopter or something? God, everything between the first stage and the final, terrible rear end-caves of New York City blends together into a featureless rage-blur for me. SelenicMartian posted:a very dumb ending which somehow manages to both kill Aya and presumably revive her just for kicks. Also THIS IS NOT HYPERBOLE. You know how when you finish MGS3 you have to kill The Boss yourself, and it's a moment that stings? Okay, they make you do that to Aya Brea. Except you don't want to and you're in her body, so what you're actually doing is murdering Aya's mind in the body of a 12 year old and you've reduced the heroine of the last two games to a preteen amnesiac. This is who you play as all game, and they then make you murder the actual Aya after this reveal because gently caress HER AM I RIGHT? claw game handjob fucked around with this message at 14:45 on Mar 20, 2015 |
