FYI, Cinco de Mayo doesn't commemorate Mexican Independence Day it is actually the day that Americans discovered putting cheddar cheese on ground beef and stuffing them in stale corn shells was something worth celebrating.

I hate to break it to you gifted and talented kids but this was more of a burn on college students than it was praise for your abilities.

At this point I like to think maybe it was their way of equalizing everyone by slowing down the gifted kids, all you have to do is tell them they're already college-level so they never think they have to work hard anymore

And yeah, ultimately it doesn't mean that much, perseverance and self-discipline are a billion times more important than any of the things 'gifted' kids get praised for.

in an ideal world, children would have a customised education that gave harder problems to kids that were good in those disciplines.

It actually means a lot, but in the wrong direction. Gifted kids never have to learn perseverance and self-discipline in k-12 specifically because they're ahead of all the curves, then they get to their first challenge in college or real life (depending on the severity of the giftedness) and completely break down with no idea of what to do. It was great.
