up is mapped to a button, its like shortening the gate for motions since you don't ever need the up inputs on the gate itself (I'm guessing, seems like a lot of work modding stuff that works fine as it is but if that's how you wanna play it, go ahead)

Can somebody tell me, in general terms, the amount of active frames normal attacks have in other fighting games like third strike, kof98, alpha 2/3, guilty gears, etc compared to sfv? I know people generally complain about the stubby range of normals in sfv which is something very easy to see, but active frames not so much.

you can just look at frame data for ryu in sfv compared to st. st ryu has about 4-8 active frames for most of his moves, while sfv has 2-4 in most cases. most games tend to hover in the 4-6 range for 2d games i think (realllly depends on the game tho)

Taking similarly buttonsy girls:

Makotos st.mp in SFIV has five startup frames, SEVEN active frames and seven recovery, and leads into full combo on hit

Karins st.mp in SFV has five startup frames, THREE active frames and twelve recovery frames, and leads into full combo on hit.

Karins button has far worse hitboxes as well. It is one of the best buttons in the game.

Cant compare a direct character in KOF'98, but most good buttons have like 5-8 active frames, goros d/f+C has THIRTEEN.

Xrd is similar to SFIV except buttons have utterly massive hitboxes in a lot of cases, which makes comparisons kinda moot.

The low active frames on sf5 normals seem deliberate in the sense that capcom doesn't want you to be able to option select a meaty vs. quickrise/backroll with the same timing.

Yea but you can do that anyway. You only need 4 active frames to beat 3f normals on both wakeups, 3 active frames to beat 4f normals which is the majority of the cast.

I mean this game would be an even bigger joke if they didn't allow any move to have more than 2 active frames, but it's pretty funny that they put the wakeup timings 5f apart just so they could go "we want you to be punished by random button mashes for 'guessing wrong' on doing a meaty" and didn't expect people to grind setplay to work around it. It's probably one of the worst parts of this game, to be honest.

holy poo poo that's more active frames than zero's st.H (10) and f+H (7)

not less than his j.h/j.d+H (18) though

its almost like moves w/ lots of active frames are really good for placing to prevent movement predicatively and also reward ppl on wakeup with cool and fun options.

Fereydun

i seriously cant believe zero's st.h is only 10f active. you can just straight up run into that poo poo
also taskmaster's j.h is apparently 4f active (though i think that's a guide typo) while magneto's j.h is 7f active??
and iron man's j.h amd j.s are 6f active what the fuuuuckkk

Puppetry only allows you to hit four cardinal directions so your choice of gate shouldn't really influence it anyway.
