Newsnight reports that Grenfell tower could have been totally fitted with sprinkers for £200,000. The cladding cost over £2 million.

The leader of Kensington council says fitting sprinklers would have made the renovation take longer.
Fitting sprinklers also probably wouldn't have done much good after they decided to coat the entire outside in flammable plastic.

They might have contained or even put out the fire in the flat it started in. It had to have been a sizable fire to ignite the cladding on the outside.

I'd disagree with this actually, depending on the outcome of the investigation. If the cladding is legal, which the newspaper articles I've read suggest it is, then blame should be directed at those who made the building regs, not those who followed them.

(Of course, blame about the generally lovely state of fire safety in the flat is a separate matter, and I'd support a corporate manslaughter charge there if it was a contributing factor).

Surely there must be a "bloody obvious" clause to cover unspoken regulations like "don't cover your high-rise building in loving kindling"

It doesn't matter what the building regs are if the council and fire service don't have the resources to do inspections and the housing concerns of poor people are dismissed out of hand.

The panels, which are classified as flammable in Germany and banned for buildings taller than 40feet in the US, did conform with UK standards. Which in turn means that the people ultimatly responsible for this disaster are the voters in the UK, who elected the representatives who did not improve the safety standards.

Depends on the scale. My shed is made of wood soaked in creosote and sealed with pitch. But I can leave that almost instantly and there's not 600 people living in my shed. I think wood and creosote and pitch should still be available as things people can buy. I also think when you're building domiciles for people to live in there should be a different set of standards, and if you're building domiciles 300ft high for hundreds of people to live in yet another should.

The existence of PU core cladding isn't the issue, the absence of regulations on applying it to large projects is. Also people that deliberately filibuster fire safety debates should be thrown into the Thames.

just because the law doesn't ban you from covering a highrise in gasoline-soaked paper doesn't make it ok to do it
