I think people have made some good points ITT & kids have always had undue expectations of sex that they have to unravel through experience. Can't say whether an indulgent outlet for deviant tastes has any real effect either, since it's been pointed out that people will create one if it does not exist.

We are quick to blame the media consumed by men, but find me some erotica or romance targeting women that doesn't depict sex as something a man performs on a passively receiving woman, where he knows exactly how she wants it without any communication, and where he is in a position of extreme power over her by virtue of hyperbolic success, wealth, physical strength or literal magic.

On the other hand, pornography is and always has been way more accessible and mainstream than harlequin romance trash. Harlequin romance certainly has its own issues with portraying a flawless, muscle-bound hunk riding in from some exotic place and rescuing a housewife from the doldrums of domestic bliss. But the readership for that has always been smaller and less influential than Playboy or Hustler in terms of driving sexual norms. In my opinion, stuff like 50 Shades is more dangerous because it encourages women to suffer straight up abuse because "love will change him if you're patient."

I reckon it's not necessarily going to lead to a super hosed up situation- an ever-increasing departure from realism and reality in extreme porn productions may help viewers to establish a proper cognitive separation between sex that is performative and manufactured for aesthetic purposes, and what you do with people you like. It helps disassociate the hyperbolic and exaggerated presentations of femininity onscreen from the instincts behind your social, professional, and romantic interactions with real people in the real world with actual real femininity. Basically at some point the porn is so hardcore and exaggerated that no one's going to develop a conditioned association with actual people and sexual relationships they might have. I'm 27, we watched hentai when we were first "discovering" porn, and only the hosed up brokebrains would ever look at a cartoon girl getting ganged up on by tentacles and be so obtuse about what "women" or "people" are that the reactions would melt through to his perception of reality. I think as long as we keep improving our sex education approaches, and just as importantly (if perhaps not more so) teach children how to socialise and interact with other people in a respectful and empathetic way, all the hardcore exaggerated hosed up porn in the world isn't going to ruin the next generation any more than the printing press did for the first kids who could get their hands on illustrations of boobs. ^^^^^^^50 Shades is trash and dangerous loving trash. I researched a bit of a related issue for a sociology paper back in uni and not only was everyone I spoke to in the fetish community super pissed at the book for basically presenting BDSM stuff as being straight up abusive, but it was also encouraging women to seek out abusive partners, ignoring any issue of consent (which is going to be nuanced as gently caress and NEEDS to be addressed explicitly in a BDSM context), and even just being dumb as poo poo about the stuff they wanted to do, buying construction rope from hardware stores or those plastic zip knot things or any manner of poo poo that could seriously injure someone. I don't just mean harlequin romance though. I mean the virtual entirety of sexual fantasy made for or by straight women, or that is enjoyed by and popular with straight women. That includes sex as depicted in mainstream media, in outright romances or romance embedded in something more general.

The Romance Novel scene is super different these days and typically considered kinda feminist and empowering; it's not what it was even 10 years ago. It's a weird transition.

It’s no coincidence Fifty Shades started as Twilight fanfiction and the message from Twilight was ‘it’s worth giving up everything for a boyfriend and aesthetic beauty’.

Technology is turning kids into psychopathic rapists who coerce girls into having demeaning and harmful sex while their friends film it on their phones and then share the video to humiliate their victims for jollies to the point where this type of behavior is the norm and kids who are capable of empathy will be ostracized and victimized. If you think for a second that this isn't happening or that it won't get much worse or that society is going to find some way to fix it, you are loving delusional. Bringing children into this world is selfish and cruel, because you're going to either create a hosed up sex freak monster or a victim of either sexual assault or merciless bullying.

They should add warnings to the beginning of porn like they do to cigarettes in Hong Kong. Instead of showing black, diseased lungs they can just show massive rash marks from compulsive masturbation.

i was thinking about how porn has a lot of weird bad things gross in it. Maybe it has to do with the way culturally it is introduced to children (this is shifting I know) that sex = weird/bad/gross so transitively weird/bad/gross = sex. i dont find it very convincing but i found the thought at least worth having.

I dunno if there's a general porn thread this question would be better suited for, but here goes: why are the men in Japanese pornos always so ugly? I don't think I've ever seen a fit, young man in any Japanese video. They're always either in their 50s or pudgy weirdos who have a disgusting slack-jawed expression throughout the entire thing. Is it a lack of talent, or a viewer-insertion thing? What's up with this?
