Another job opened up, but with less pay than the last one. If you work at Geek Squad or some such place, this would be a good job to get your foot in the door for an IT career.

Anyone looking for an entry level IT job in the North Bay Area?
Pay is $1820 - 3658 per month, full time with benefits. Doesn't require much experience or education.

Job Opening

Technical Writer/Editor

Location: Bellevue/Redmond, WA

We'll soon be hiring an additional technical writer at Securitas. You would be working directly alongside me, supporting Microsoft's Global Datacenter Operations division as it expands its operations around the globe.

While we are at vendors at Microsoft, we're not subject to the 18-month on/6-month off thing, and you are working for a company, not a contracting agency, so there are real bennies like vacation and a 401K.

Good skills/background to have:

  • Experience with IT-oriented SOP documentation
  • Technical Writing certificate or similar educational background
  • Comfortable with SharePoint and the various Office products
  • Experience working at Microsoft or other large tech industry environments is a nice-to-have so that you know the organizational ropes

We have all kinds here, from people who have 1-2 years of experience to people with 30.

Ideal candidates are critical thinkers who skillfully identify and articulate weaknesses in organization and teaching, adopt a coaching/mentoring role with instructors, firmly but diplomatically communicate with instructors, work both independently and in a distributed team environment, and reliably meet deadlines to produce courses on deadline. This is a great position for someone looking for part-time work.

Primary duties
- Coach instructors on techniques for how to teach difficult or important concepts in their video courses
- Give constructive feedback on video modules regarding setting, instructor appearance, presentation, teaching style, pace, and visuals
- Identify opportunities for authors to improve organization, presentation, clarity, and value to the course's intended audience
- Continually assess both script and video content at a high level
- Iterate on video production process with instructors and other team members
- Manage the course-development process so that authors are completing video units by due dates
- Ensure that video courses adhere to Manning's teaching guidelines
- Provide project status and content assessment to publisher, acquisition editor, development manager and other Manning staff
- Contribute to the ongoing assessment and improvement of editorial procedures and standards
- Perform occasional tasks related to course marketing

Must have requirements
- General understanding of technical concepts, software development, and current industry trends
- 1+ years previous substantive editing, video presentation experience, or instructional design
- Must be available for recurring meetings and meetings with instructors or other coworkers (primarily during U.S. business hours)
- Strong project- and time-management skills
- Excellent organization and multitasking skills
- Must be comfortable learning new tools relevant to video. Must be proficient in computer usage and comfortable with using online word processing and storage tools, like Google Docs and Box
- Must work well in agile, growing environment where processes may change
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable communicating via email, Skype, and phone
- Must have remote office setup (computer, Internet and email access, reliable phone line)
- Preferred qualifications
- Previous experience in a video publishing environment.
