Did anyone find it strange there were like three random scenes in The Night Comes for Us where the actors spoke in English? Maybe I missed the context for that.

It seemed like it was the shared language between two characters who spoke Indonesian and Mandarin respectively.

dude directed a movie about how slaughtering Native Americans could have been justified if they were weirdo cannibals, a movie about how latinx people are evil monsters who need to be stomped into the dirt by a Celtic Cross-tatted huge skinhead white guy, and most recently a movie about how police brutality is actually no big deal starring Mel Gibson. dude also wrote a Puppet Master spinoff that reconfigures the puppets from being quite literally antifa puppets to being turbo-racist Nazi puppets who actively hunt racial minorities. in addition to this, he recently signed up with a production company that plans on making movies with "un-PC" "conservative values."

like, there's no fire, in the sense that he's never come out and pledged his fealty to Identity Evropa or something, but... his leanings are pretty loving obvious from what he's made.

e: also, the Korean abortionist thing in Brawl is a slightly telephone-gamed version of an old racist-fundie bugbear, forced abortions in China.

Yeah, it's not unusual for multilingual foreign shows/movies to use English as a common language. Like this political drama I saw where the Norwegian characters spoke Norwegian, the Russian characters spoke Russian, but they spoke English to each other.

I won't deny that there was stuff about Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99 (the two things I've seen from him) that felt weirdly regressive, but I feel like you are attaching broad, overarching themes to dumb action movies that probably weren't intended.

Like, I'm not gonna defend the guy. I definitely felt that both of those movies had some red flags in them and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he had some lovely political views, but I definitely didn't see either one as trying to push an agenda about stomping out minorities or something. If anything I felt they were both pretty tone deaf at times, but I didn't feel like they had a level of propaganda that you've stated.

I can't speak to anything else he's done.

I am still going to watch Dragged Across Concrete when it comes out, and I hope it is great. Even after all the poo poo Mel Gibson's did, I still think his best movie is Apocalypto.

I get what you are saying, but since I don't feel like I am being forced fed his agenda I ignore it. Honestly I find it is easy to ignore since his movies are exploitation movies to me. That said I did have to stop reading one of my favorite writers, Dan Simmons, after being forced fed his anti-Obama and anti-Muslim agenda in one of this books.

I've watched the first two and it's basically about a lawyer who has gotten like 19 convictions overturned taking his case. There's some pretty shocking more evidence about stuff the defense clearly overlooked as well as the prosecution that this really good lawyer keeps digging up. Obviously this is largely why the first one was so successful but it still has the problem that the season builds as if there will be some sort of meaningful conclusion and both these guys are still in prison. That being said, it's well shot and more of the first.

Before we engage we should hang back and study their tactics.
I highly recommend the first 20 minutes of Extraordinary: The Stan Romanek Story if you want to see literally the most laughably fake "evidence" of aliens you've ever seen. I literally googled after 20 minutes because I thought it was actually a parody and not a real documentary.

We turned it off once the personal interviews started, because my googling had revealed the shocking twist ending: He was convicted of posession of a ridiculous amount of child pornography, which he claims was planted by aliens/the government. He also has admitted he faked "some" of his videos and photos.

Eh. A film-maker who's written/directed several questionable films with regressive content hiring an abusive and vocal anti-semite and a vocal conservative gun nut to play police officers who feel justified in torturing minorities as vigilantes because they were "pushed into racism" is enough for me to say No Thank You.

There's nothing wrong with someone pointing out that a film might be problematic, as there are plenty of people who won't want to spend their time and money on hateful stuff, especially right now.

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell is so entertaining. She's obviously not an actress, which is especially noticable in the second episode where she sounds like she has a bad cold. I keep wanting to watch it with my kid, but then a character will drop a line where I think I really don't want to have her asking me or her mom what that meant. Going to be a fun Halloween marathon when she's a little older though!

I don't really care much for it and normally that sort of thing would be my thing. It seems like it doesn't know who its audience is. The language is too spicy for little kids, but I swear at least half the show (or more than half) is the poorly acted puppet part. The actual cooking parts remind me of this:

It's spicy for kids under 12, but that's about it. While it's structure is basically Bear In The Big Blue House, the macabre and spicy sense of humor fits well with classic Jim Henson films (maybe not the first Muppet movie, but some of the later sequels) and sitcoms. It's less raunchy than things I grew up with, like Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy and Cow & Chicken.

As someone else mentioned (maybe in another thread), the show isn't trying to bog you down with the Baking 101 aspect. It expects you to come to it with knowing how to at least bake a cake, make icing, etc. While watching it with my friends, one said with indignation, "Well this is unreasonable, this would take hours" and then Christine immediately says "Don't misunderstand, this takes hours of work. My piping looks perfect here, but I like to spend twenty minutes practicing my designs on some cardboard or paper, so I can get the feel." She's not really withholding the information for the designs she's teaching. She's giving you enough information to go out and do it yourself.

Your owl analogy isn't wrong, but it's true for The Great British Bake Off, and every other Cupcake/Cake/Baking War I've seen. Even Nailed It, which is designed for people who don't know baking, blaze through details instead of elaborating. I don't know why people are expecting this one to be any different. Do you watch Bob Ross to learn how to stretch canvas and explore color theory, or do you watch him to get an idea of how to paint a mountain so you can try it yourself?

Her acting is a little stilted, but it feels intentional? It's like Julia Child living in that weird suburban neighborhood in Edward Scissorhands.

The thing is its a cooking show, not a cooking competition (I am a sucker for those shows too) so it would be better to compare it to something like Good Eats rather than Nailed it. If the puppet stuff was shorter, I think it would be a lot better. I don't think they're interesting enough. I wish they spent more time on the cooking part to show a talented person doing their craft!
