Why would a band even name themselves Cellist and not have any string players?

I'm a huge dork and can't stop listening to this album, which is weird since I'm not often a fan of tech death. They're eclectic without being obnoxious or ironic but still have the heft to back up acoustic/world music sounding interludes.

This track is definitely waaaaay closer to Recreation Day-era Evergrey than Symphony X -- both the vocals and guitars are practically emulations of Tom S. Englund -- but since Evergrey hasn't put out a good album in close to 15 years, I'll take it!

I dunno I just listened to Recreation Day and I can see similarities, but it's way closer to Symphony X IMO. The vocals are much more Russell Allen with that kind of gravelly/gruff over-singing, and Evergrey seems to be "softer".

Of course I never listened to Evergrey before just now, and have listened to a LOT of Symphony X. When I listen to Borealis I honestly almost can't even hear anything other than this dudes loving voice which is so drat good.

So maybe I'm just being influenced by my listening history.

I seem to be in "acquisition mode" right now, finding random poo poo all over the place.

Ancient Ascendant was a Google Music recommendation based on Wayfarer for whatever reason.

"Groovy Death/Black Metal" from UK, very groovy, great vocals, good poo poo.

There's more than a little Carcass worship here, but I suppose that's to be expected.

Been playing this Batushka album a ton lately, some great grooves here too, and the bells that start each track do things inside my head

Since I balls'd it up with a dupe, here's a question: Older Opeth (Morningrise, My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life) has hit the point of hardly even registering as music anymore, that kind of atmospheric dissonant prog/groove/death/black/doom heaviness is just what it sounds like in my head. Black Crown Initiate has a couple solid entries, so does some of The Faceless' Autotheism. Any other must-listen recommendations?

Think Symphony X only Canadian and with a near identical ( if not better, I think ) vocalist than Russell Allen, this guy can loving sing, it's ridiculous.

They also list their influences as:

Sonata Arctica, Evergrey, Kamelot, Nightwish, Nocturnal Rites, In Flames, Mercenary

So you know what you're gonna get with this - synth-heavy power-prog metal.

I'm not sure if this is a slag on Symphony X, Borealis, or both.

I mean if you listen to that whole Borealis album, it's almost a direct clone, like even the tone & cadence of the acoustics on the "ballad" songs sounds just like Symphony X.

The vocalist is a clone of Russell Allen almost directly, only a bit better I think for some reason, not sure why.

Most music I listen to I focus on the guitars and the sound and think "I want to PLAY that!" and every other instrument ( including vocals ) is almost incidental.

With Borealis, all I can think is "gently caress, I want to SING like that!" and then I try and it sounds pathetic.

To be fair, I also try this with Symphony X too.

Lyrically Borealis is a little weepy, but Symphony X lyrics are poo poo anyway ( just like with all metal ).

I don't know what this refers to, but I'm not saying one is better than the other and never did.

I'm just saying I think I like the vocalist of Borealis more than Symphony X but I can't quantify why since they are so remarkably similar.

It could just be because when I saw Symphony X recently it basically ruined things for me because Russell Allen was such a Dad-Rocker that I couldn't enjoy it, watching him gyrating on stage was revolting.

It should be noted that the TBA band for FMHIV is Absu and Ritual Decay is no longer playing either show as they've disbanded. Grave Ritual are on the FMH show now. Also on DTF a few other bands are no longer playing as well: Abhomine, Trajeto de Cabra, and Martyrvore while Cemetery Lust from Oregon have been added.

Also I would HIGHLY recommmend making it the Fuckin Metal Hell show if you're a fan of Nyog/Hellvetron/Nexul as this will be the last shows they're doing for a while since A.X. will be turning himself in to serve a jail sentence.
