Did you see this year's re-release on vinyl with full-sized original artwork?

Also, the 5.1 SACD version is awesome and you can still get it pretty cheap.

I did not know about the re-release! And it's quite affordable. Thanks!

I worked with someone at my last job who's apparent prized possession was a Chrysler Fifth Avenue.

Same, but a Bonneville. Considering GM's habit of using the same car across product lines, they were probably the same vehicle.

But give me a B-body Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon any day.

My wife had one when we were dating/first married. Horrible, horrible car. It certainly looked nice. She had the "gold" edition that was the dark green with gold trim. Quality wise it was a giant piece of green poo poo. Constantly needed repairs and the repairs were at least $450 on up other than when the stupid electric radio antenna broke and I installed that myself after buying the replacement which was over $100.

I finally convinced her to get rid of it when the transmission locked up at 61000 miles. We sold it to the transmission shop for $3500 in non-running condition and used that money to put a down payment on a new Mazda 6 that she drove for 13 years.

There's a reason Oldsmobile doesn't exist any more - and that car is a prime example as to why.

In fairness, they are somewhat interesting cars. The Trabant especially, being made from a composite material literally reinforced with recycled cotton. And it's been just about 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. That's more than enough time for people to have been born removed from the context that made them truly awful cars i.e. them being the only options available to someone, so they're just objectively bad cars with subjectively interesting character.

Also they take well to speed parts and tuning because they're really crude two strokes and incredibly light so they're popular for low buck racing too.

I got a story! When I was very young my sister bought a Tempo. Same burgundy color as the Topaz in that pic. It was new then so it wasn't a bad car. It got traded in eventually for a Chevy Celebrity. That car was just as lovely and I drove it alot when I had my learner's permit.

Anyhow, my mom always drove beater cars. $500 shitheaps that would last a year or so before going to the boneyard. One of those shitheaps was a Tempo. When my sister had her Tempo my niece left some crayons on the back deck and they melted into the cloth. The one my mom got had that same Crayola melted in. It's strange that the same car went through a few owners and ended up back in the family. Especially strange cause those cars really were awful and it's amazing it lasted that long.

My high school used a Chevy Celebrity for Driver's ED. I got to drive my dad's '85 Camry a lot before I was railroaded into buying my first car (the aforementioned never again Chevy), and that's definitely the one I have nostalgia for, just boxy enough, and it had a sunroof. My dad liked that car a lot, and if the transmission hadn't started going to poo poo, I'm sure my dad would still own that car.

My parents bought a boxy, manual transmission Camry when I was in HS (also an '85 I think?). I ended up buying it off them for $1000 and drove that thing to 198,000 miles. It was a beast.

Are there any cars that are patently bad these days? Besides Mini's and anything from Chrysler-Fiat?

Even low reliability vehicles today would probably rank highly compared to even quality cars stuff from the 70's and 80's.

Interesting personal anecdote:
A couple of years ago I visited a very small car / plane show in Anacortes, WA while on a family vacation. I saw a Trabant 601S Deluxe stuffed into the corner of a hangar that had a couple of jets in it. I walked over to check it out (East-German expat here) and started talking to the owner of all of it. He had bought a Czech jet trainer and had it shipped to him - presumably somewhat disassembled - in a standard shipping container which still had some room for perhaps a car, the shipper informed him. The shipper suggested some car he wasn't familiar with and when the man opened his container in Anacortes, he found the Trabant in there.
Anyways, the really neat part: a couple of years after meeting that guy I found out that it was Bill Anders, who flew as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 8 - the first ever flight around the moon. This was the famous 1968 moon mission that had NASA get in trouble over the three astronauts broadcasting their reading of (some of) Genesis' creation story on Christmas Day, 1968. I sure wish I had known earlier whom I was talking to, because while Bill was trying to tell me about Czech trainers and Trabants, my kid was sitting in that trainer, wildly pushing buttons.

Have a couple pics:

Hey what's that?

No way!

Original tires!

I swear there is an engine in there. Oh and lol original battery!!

Standard issue Trabant interior, down to the seat covers.

Hey, look. Look, if- if you screw me on this, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine, you rat bastard!
If not for having a CVT transmission (can't drive stick), the 3-cylinder Mitsubishi Mirage actually really intrigues me. Really stripped down car and I wished it was MORE stripped down than it was.

It's got a lot of features in this recent model year as standard, but I wish it actually had manual locks, manual windows, a generic basic push-button CD/AM/FM. It almost seems like it's so stripped down that an average person with a repair guide could almost keep it working should something break outside of the engine/transmission.
