If you're referring to what I said about if they had an alternate plot line of AVALANCHE vs Shinra, Aeris staying alive would be more due to there being no Sephiroth to shiskabob her. I mean, you could just have her arbitrarily killed off partway through.

I'm remembering that terrible film The Time Machine (the remake) and how his wife dies no matter what he does, and implementing a series of events where Aeris dies, so you reload and get her past that obstacle, only for her to die in another way, reload and get her past that one, etc etc etc with the final death being something utterly ridiculous like her dying of a heart attack and her last words being 'I'm MEANT to die, jackass'

Yeah, I managed to read that whole thing last night and a bunch of the comments.

I'm... hmm. I know it's silly, but I can't help but agree with a few of the points making sense, though I imagine the real explanation is "gaps in the writing". Stuff like Squall's sudden love interest in Rinoa and her's in him, despite her starting out being head over heels for Seifer and him being pretty neutral and to my knowledge having no internal dialog expressing interest in her

Fun read anyway.

Just beat my junction-abuse game of FF8 and that was fun. I got plowed because I was playing the entire game just one-hitting everything with Renzokuken, didn't bother junctioning any kind of defense, and Griever's second form gets its insanely-damaging attack in before I can act. I ended up grinding high level magic in the Island Closest to Hell / Heaven, until I realized wait, I have Hero items, who needs defense? :v:

I like FF8 a lot. It was nice playing it without the random battles, which is something I have much less tolerance for now that I'm old. Like I'd whined about earlier, I think with a retooling of the script and a re-examination of how to portray Squall, it could be a lot better. This playthough [and this thread's discussion] helped me look at what's there a lot differently.

Why in the gently caress would a remake have new characters? It isn't a sequel, prequel, or spin-off so...
That being said, i totally wouldn't mind having a few of the existing characters become playable at some point, maybe in mini-games. I mean, c'mon, who wouldn't love a turk-centric gold saucer night? Not only would they be hilariously stalking cloud on his date, they could be having a good time while remaining absolutely in character. Not to mention a whole love-polygon revolving around Elena.

I imagine the only real change, if any, is that Yuffie will join the party earlier so that you can have an easier time wooing her for the Golden Saucer date (at the very least, Yuffie and Vincent can't be optional characters this time around). I'd be great if everyone was fair game for the date though. Imagine a date with Cid

They should replace Cait Sith's moogle with Mog from VI. Eventually he gets pissed off, dumps the cat off the side of the Highwind, and you get a second Dragoon.

I'm not sure how she could join any earlier. It doesn't make that much sense for the narrative for her to be in Midgar (anything can change though), and there isn't even that much opportunity to get points between leaving Midgar to post-Mythril Mines.

It would be doubly hilarious to go on a date with Cait only to see him jumping away with the Keystone while Cloud went to the restroom or something.

Pretty sure that Midgar has an ample supply of materia given that it's the headquarters of the company with a monopoly on the energy that makes the stuff. Hell, even the slums of Midgar have materia!

CG cutscenes, and they're iconic characters now that are pretty popular in the FFVII universe. It'd be strange to keep them as hidden party members. It's pretty easy to make Vincent required as he's got a natural place to join. Yuffie's a bit tougher since for some reason she just hangs around in random forests around the world waiting for heavily armed groups to mug.

Hardware is kind of getting to the point where there's really no reason to pre-render cutscenes anymore, yeah. They've kind of been Square's thing since they really sold the wow-factor of pretty FMVs in the 90s, but even they must be realizing the the shrinking graphical boost just isn't worth the inconveniences at this point.

Yuffie has good reason to hate Shinra too and is stupid enough to try to pull some kind of con against them in Midgar. If I had to put her in the early game, I'd have the gang run into her while sneaking around the Shinra building.

Okay so THANKFULLY we will not have Gackt or whatever other Crisis Core people reappearing, that's good.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm actually kind of happy Nomura's working on this since he does know the original game better than most would in Square-Enix, and also considering Kingdom Hearts did manage to have funny stupid moments amidst the internal DRAMA, I think this is the best shot.

...kinda wish Yoshida was involved cuz he seems to have a really good head on game design.
