Could just be a beat up old video card that doesn't support DX11. I had one until it died a couple years ago and I was forced to upgrade (if you can call a 750 Ti an upgrade).

I dunno, the 750ti is a pretty amazing card for the price. And vastly better than anything anyone complaining about lacking DX11 support could possibly have.

Well, there's always Runescape if you can't afford $30 for a dx11 card.

Seriously, these are $30 new, $10 used.

Since you insist, here's the announcement, and here are the important bits:

Cryptic posted:

If you are budget conscious, any of the following cards will function. Many of these cards are several years old, but they will still provide a basic Star Trek Online experience.

NVidia GeForce 8000 or better
ATI/AMD Radeon HD 2000 or better
Intel G965M Express, or Intel HD Graphics 2000 or better

Above all, take a close look at the Video Card manufacturer’s documentation for any card you are going to purchase, and ensure that the card specifically says it supports Direct3D Hardware Feature Level 10 or higher.
The NVidia GeForce 8000 series and the Radeon HD 2000 series first came out in 2006. The minimum cards listed are quite literally 10 years old.

According to wikipedia the 640M support DirectX feature level 11.0, so you'll still be able to play log on occasionally to see if the queues are still dead (they are).

It does not give me the option in the menu, and i have latest drivers. Hopefully this is accurate.

Acer drivers? I bet acer got lazy and stopped pushing Nvidia updates. Like every laptop manufacturer ever.

I don't actually have a 640m, I just went off the wikipedia specs. To see for sure, run gpu-z and see what feature level it supports. If it's 10.0 or higher, go complain to Cryptic that they're lying about their new minimum requirements (good luck).

Considering they have an added bonus to them currently is it worth me buying some of these R&D packs? I do need upgrade items as I don't have really many and I'm sure I'll be using lots of them soon (well, when an R&D weekend happens).

Nope. Nothing in them is worth noting.

Just sell like, one or two keys on the exchange and go buy all the mats, superior upgrade kits, whatever you want using EC.

In case you were wondering why they do system-wide announcements when everyone wins, here's your answer. It makes it seem like the chance is way higher than it is because people who don't understand probability don't see the hundreds of loser boxes being opened between the wins. gently caress gamble boxes and every game that uses them! :toot:

Does that include laptops? The only reason I stopped playing before was my old card burned out and the onboard video can't keep up but it turns out the old card couldn't have done DX11 anyway so

As if the infinity R&D box wasn't lucrative enough for them:

quote:

Starting Friday, December 9, 2016, when you spend $100 USD worth of Zen on an account (10,000 Zen) in Star Trek Online, you’ll be rewarded with a one-time supply drop of 4x R&D Packs, claimable by one character of your choice in the account!

Additionally, these R&D packs will be affected by the Infinity R&D Pack Promo bonuses so you can potentially win a Special Requisition Choice Pack – Tier 6 Promotional Ship Choice Pack

Someone in Korea, I'm pretty sure. It's likely an outgrowth of the old skeevy "spend cash money to get a temporary XP boost to make our intentionally lovely XP curve tolerable" stuff.

Luckily(?) all the sociopaths who designed these things have since moved on to mobile gaming, since you can get the same amount of gambling addict dollars while having a tiny fraction of the up front costs.
