On the other hand people were going all boo hiss police state when he was first detained because omg thought police he's just shitposting. This probably wouldn't have happened if our society didn't have its heads completely up its collective rear end when it comes to treating the mentally ill. We seem to only have 2 plays in our playbook; release and cross fingers or shoot until dead.

DariusLikewise posted:So the police detained a mentally deranged person, released them to a small Ontario town where they continued to plan their attack and killed him after they got a tip that their inaction resulted in a possible terrorist attack. How is this a win for law enforcement? I hate Canadians. Right? If anything this seems like a failure of the whole peace bond process. If the guy was a legitimate terror threat (apparently he was) why wasn't he arrested and held in detention?

we should indefinitely detain all people that show signs of mental illness until we can Figure This Thing Out

Indefinitely detain all Canadians until we can set the Canadian Terrorism Threat index to low. It's the only way to prevent terrorism guys.

He was arrested and released on a peace bond, and later shot whilst trying to violate the terms of that peace bond by blowing things up. For those whining about this outcome: what should've been done differently? Keeping more people locked up for longer periods of time? That doesn't seem beneficial, or particularly legal before they've committed a crime. We waited until he posed a real and verifiable risk, so as not to unduly violate his civil liberties, and now a lovely aspiring terrorist is dead. Seems ideal.

You'd figure the evidence used to secure a peace bond would also be sufficient for obtaining a search warrant to find said bomb-making stuff.

"These are people who are part of the system. It’s entirely different. It’s not attacking innocents, people who are just going about their daily lives. If a country goes to war with another country or another people or another community, I think that they have to be prepared for things like that to happen, and when it does happen, they shouldn’t act surprised. They had it coming to them. They deserved it." Not a whole lot different from what you might read around here. CBC was reporting they had to set off explosive devices? He already built the bomb I budss?

Rather hilariously, BILD has won a reprieve from paying the development charges for the Ford Subway extension to Scarborough because they argued the ridership numbers don't warrant the cost. The OMB agreed. I imagine we'll find out what the ONCA thinks in 12-18mos. The Ford saga never ends, it just makes lawyers rich.

I was wondering how long it would take for Doug Ford to try and spin this to his advantage.
