I've got a bunch of Ali flashlights, some are rechargeable and a few have come with battery holders so you can use a rechargeable or just AAs. They're mostly fine, out of like 10 various flashlights and headlamps I've only had one die on me. Enter your parameters and sort by most orders and you'll find a good enough one

Does anyone have recommendations for a decent allround flashlight?

It sounds a bit banal, but we need one and there's a ton of good looking ones on Ali but I have no idea if they're any good. I kind of prefer battery-operated ones over ones with built in Li Ion batteries because of flexibility (are there ones that have built in battery chargers?). Other than that I don't really know.

It has been years since I bought this, so I can't link but I got an ok flashlight. It came with a self rechargable battery in that 18650 form factor with a micro-usb port and with an adapter to instead put in 3 AAA cells.

I found this exceptionally well made and more useful than I was expecting, just if you're not desperate for a traditional flashlight.

£7, much more reasonable . I ordered two and they arrived today, and if you need a head-mounted light they are very much worth the money - light, comfortable to wear, good and bright and fairly solidly constructed. Leaving one in my go-bag and one at home in the tool cupboard.

Big

Medium

Smaller

These use 18650 batteries (an easily available LiIon battery), but have onboard usb-c charging. Expensive but stupidly bright. (A q8 is significantly brighter than an average car headlight).

Keyfob size

Matchbox size

Both tiny, extremely bright (more lumens than a maglite), and usb charging.

I've had a few good torches from AliExpress over the years, normally whatever Cree knockoff that's around $20 but they all end up catastrophically falling apart after a couple of years (of fairly regular use tbf) so I recommend getting 2 and keeping one as a backup or just get a new one every 18 months or so to save having one fail when you really need it.

What’s weird is now there are multiple sellers who have this luggage with good reviews but they would be $40-60 total more with shipping than mine was. My seller is still up and there are reviews with pics so hopefully I just got in early and it arrives as advertised

I've had an order languishing at a mailing center two states away for a full month now, waiting for its Combined Delivery pal(s). The problem is that none of my orders have been combined with it, and if you check out the Combined Delivery details page, it says "This C.D. package contains 1 order." So it's waiting for something that'll never come.

I've explained this to the seller and asked if they can remove the C.D. status so I can have the drat thing already. I haven't heard back yet. :smith: Just when you think you have Ali's quirks figured out...

I don't know what service it is--it's whatever Ali uses to put multiple packages into one to be shipped to the buyer. Could be some dude's basement as far as anyone knows, full of people packin' packages. All the US Postal Service knows is that it's at a "shipping partner facility". "This does not indicate receipt by USPS". They are officially "Awaiting Item". Same, USPS, same.

If you want a cheap, useful and nearly disposable light that is simple, get these guys. I bought a bunch years ago and people around the shop are still using them 8-9 years later. They have a magnet on one end that needs to be glued in better but once you do they serve their purpose.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003813539968.html

Having a super bright led flashlight is nice but when it comes to emergencies or just fixing poo poo, having a few of these around are super helpful. Plus, the switch that controls the light doesn't drain the battery the way a lot of the LED flashlights on Ali do.

My son and I have been playing Xiangqi/chinese chess for a couple weeks now but just using a traditional set I handwrote some cheat notes on so we could remember what they were.

I figured surely someone must make a decent set with figurines or western style pieces, but I struck out on Amazon.

So I figured well at least there'll be some on Aliexpress. Nope. The only ones I could find are itty bitty, like 12" wide boards. Maybe one of y'all has better Ali search-fu than me.

I bought some LED lamps on ali and they're arriving via a delivery company i've never heard of before and the delivery attempt was 'spamming my phone from an unknown number 6 times in rapid succession then leaving a door tag with an illegible handwritten tracking number'

this isn't ali's fault delivery is just somehow not yet a solved problem

I dunno if I'd bother Ali for this one

I bought a 3 pack of Duracell torches from Costco for camping. I'm 100% certain you could get the exact same torches elsewhere but these came with 18 Duracell ultra AAA cells for AU$32 (enough for two sets in each torch) and they were bright as poo poo, definitely lived up to the 550lm labelling.

Many shops actually send those lights free when you order a battery, because a battery can be shipped inside a device with less restrictions than a battery just on its own. And those lights are so cheap they’re basically disposable. I keep one in my car just in case I need to give one to someone.

But there are so many better options out there. I know it seems ridiculous to spend a lot of money on a flashlight, but I’ve lived in remote places where electricity is part time and unreliable so I’ve learned the value of a good light. The mid size light (sp36) will stay on for 45 days on its lowest setting. I keep my q8 beside the breaker panel, it’s been there for about 14 months without recharging (with the green status led on the switch turned on) and it still has about 75 percent charge.

It’s just nice to be prepared.

norp posted:

Flashlight nerds with equipment have measured, those top out at about 250 lumens. The matchbox size one above puts out 500.

The ones I posted are all measured and reviewed by nerds and actually pretty much match up with their marketing.
