The gambit the Democrats played was that they could win the Presidency until demographic shifts eventually gave them an unbeatable advantage in congress. This is a really stupid plan for a thousand obvious reasons, because Democrats (the national leaders) are idiots.

I'm convinced that even if Trump only gets once term, he'll have 10x the effect on the American political consciousness as Obama. Why? Because he lacks scruples. He doesn't care about bullshit bipartisanship, and he won't compromise. That is, he has a better understanding of modern American politics than the dems ever did, and he'll be more competent than Obama. And as he does all his stupid poo poo, everyone left of center is going to have a thought pop into their head: "Why are we the only ones suffering? Why couldn't Obama do half the poo poo for us, that Trump is doing for his base?". From that frustration, a real anger is going to set in, one that hasn't existed in a long time. The era of meeting in the middle, of compromise, that era (if it ever existed) is over. No one is going to buy that anymore. The tea party, the Republicans, have unilaterally killed that idea, with their own hands. Dumb poo poo liberals will probably blame both the dems and reps, pull off a bullshit equivocation, but everyone else will know the truth: that the dems brought a flower to a knife fight, and got shanked. Now, politics is going to become more cut throat. Kill or be killed. Win, or die. I'm convinced that either the american left gets its own stalin/lenin figure, a ruthless cunning revolutionary, or it will die under the boot of fascism. But history is going to remember Obama as the do-nothing appeaser, a weak coward who could have acted to prevent everything after, but did not. So, in a similar light to those hitler appeaser leaders.

the truth is obama might actually be seeing positively in the future depending on how the next 12 years ago, if Sanderistas win the democratic civil war and usher in single payer in 2024 then Obama might very well be seen as a non-criminal Nixon: someone who governed mostly as a status quo president but whose rhetoric and philosophy ended up fundamentally changing the country a few cycles down the line
