Any recs for some offline games I can load up before traveling? I'm okay with dropping a few bucks for good games. I've enjoyed vampire survivors, stardew, canabalt, and layton on mobile for some examples.

There's a few games in the Vampire Survivors vein I keep coming back to if you want more of those:

Brotato (Premium)
20 Minutes Till Dawn
Magic Survival
Ultra Blade

All offline and without any ad farm mtx nonsense.

Soul Knight is fun, it's a bit like Enter the Gungeon/Nuclear Throne with a variety of characters/skills/weapons. (Has some online progression stuff/limited mtx but works just fine offline)
Kairosoft games are always a good time for something in a simulation genre. Pick your favorite theme and go nuts. I like Dungeon Village 2 and Tropical Resort Story the most out of the ones I've tried so far.
Siralim Ultimate has a pretty decent mobile port (onscreen joystick/buttons); if that sort of monster catching team building gameplay appeals to you at all it should keep you busy for... well, forever, probably.

Out of the blue, beyond any cause you can trace, you'll suddenly realize things are not how you perceived them at all. For some reason, you will no longer be the person you believed you once were.

I don't recall if it needs to connect to start, but the port of Dead Cells is remarkably playable on a phone screen for such a complex game. I'll also throw out 9th Dawn 3 (Haven't played 1/2, but they look to be similar) as a fairly sprawling action rpg.

Super Snail looks like a fun little thing but I do have to remind mobile game makers that the ideal startup time for your game is less than ten seconds. Going through layers of server pings and logins every time you pick up your phone isn't going to be good for retention.

The images have nothing to do with the game and the trailer makes it look really horny when its mostly about managing a kingdom and a team of knights.. I kinda hate that now that I see it, but the actual game loop is satisfying and there's a ton to do. You do have a wife and lovers and heirs and stuff but its not some porny harem game.

The tutorial for this snail game is like a fever dream

Edit: Seriously though I really hate when tutorials just do the "Click this now click this now click this now click this" thing. Especially when the tutorial forces you to use the time skips that I'm sure are not infinite in the real game without watching ads or something.

Edit: Lol there's no way to change servers without starting a new character. Also I had to clear data in the app after changing because it was going to make me do the tutorial again before the server selection opened up to switch back and fuuuuck that.

Help, android thread! I'm looking for a game I used to have installed. It was a grid, and I want to say it was very grey. On the outside of the grid, on one side, was a power source and throughout the grid were many computers. Every square on the grid had a line in a different configuration, and you could rotate them. The ultimate goal was to get power to all of the computers.

It may not be the specific version you're looking for, but Simon Tatham's Puzzles has a game in it that's structurally similar.

I got through the tutorial for Super Snail and didn't feel a hint of fun. It was a shame because whoever put it together clearly had a lot of talent and put a mountain of work into it. All in all, it was about as engaging as going outside and picking pine cones off the ground.

I was similarly disappointed with Merge Mayor; I got the concept, and I liked merging stuff at first, but the very second the monetization came in, I uninstalled. I guess I don't care about merging poo poo enough to put up with any barrier to doing that right then and there.

I'm kind of glad for it; I don't need another Egg Inc in my life.

I had a long bus ride so I installed Super Snail and started pressing buttons... i've never felt more old, confused, and out of touch.

It feels like every single button I press causes more branching menus and options and confusing paths of behavior, all obviously in the interest of somehow driving me towards wanting to spend money on some poo poo. But it's so insane and labyrinthine that I couldn't even get to the part where I'd want something that required money

While looking for my "connect the computers together with rotating blocks" game, I found another version of a game found in Simon Tantham's collection; Flood!

The difference with this one and ST's is that instead of specifically touching the blocks of the colour you want to change to, it's assumed you start in the upper left corner, and you select the next colour from the bottom.

I don't know why I like this version better but I do. Maybe it's because of the progressive version where it gets tougher every level.

The snail game gets a little easier to parse after the first hour or two where you literally are just clicking on red !'s the entire time. I still mostly have no idea what any of these upgrades or stats do but the core gameplay is just sending your snail out on missions and making upgrades with the stuff he finds. They just really inundate you with complete nonsense with no context for that first hour or so.
